:c Hi this is my second laptop problem, The first was successfully closed although it concluded with a free fix, Thank you.

My second Pc is also a Zoostorm Purchased May 2008 from Pc nextday
This unit has a SANTA ROSA CRB Main Board
The System name is Crestline & ICH8M Chipset and is made by Intel

My pc started to freeze & shut down and will not start at all, No screen, Power nothing.

I sent it to Allied Computers International and they informed me that the Graphics IC has overheated and blown.
Can you tell me if this PC has the Nvidia Chip fitted & if I have any chance of a claim?

Thank you Benarca.

Hello Benarca and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your second laptop has also failed.

Your latest laptop has an Nvidia 8400 GPU and so it is highly probable that this laptop is also inherently defective.

The process for making a claim will be the same as before so you should be familiar with this now.

Who did you purchase the laptop from and what method of payment did you use?

Please let me know and I will advise further.

Best wishes

HI lapcure,
Thank you again, This site is class you have saved me so much money and hopefully with this claim you will save me more.
As my last laptop I also purchased this laptop from PC Nextday and payed by credit Card.
Do you think I can claim as the pc will not start at all so any signs linked with the inherant fault cannot be seen, All I have is the Repairers report stating "display IC Faulty"
Thanks Benarca33.

Hello Benarca,

When you say that the laptop will not start at all are there any LED's illuminated when you plug the charger in or when you switch the laptop on?

If there are no LED's illuminated have you checked to see if the charger is working?

Also, if there are no LED's illuminated and if you know that the charger is okay then the laptop could have failed due to component failure which would be unrelated to the Nvidia GPU.

Please let me know and I will advise further.

Best wishes

Hello Lapcure,

When I connect the power supply to the computer the charging and battery LED's both light up, when I press the power on button nothing.
ACI the laptop repair company say the it is not economical to repair the unit as the display IC has overheated and failed.

Regards Benarca.

Hello Benarca,

Usually, when the GPU fails, the LED's will illuminate when switched on but then either the LED's will go out again or they will stay illuminated though with no display to the LCD panel.

If the LED's do not illuminate when the laptop is switched on then I would say that the current problem is not related to the GPU.

Of all the laptops that I have inspected with this defect they all displayed LED's when switched on and I have not seen a single case where the LED's didn't change when switched on.

Is this the case with your laptop or do the LED's illuminate and then go off again?

I appreciate that you have stated that the charging and battery LED's illuminate but could you please let me know if any other LED's come on when you press the power button.

Once I know that I will be able to advise further.

Best wishes

When I connect my power supply the battery/charging LED lights,
When I press the power on button the a blue LED lights as well and stay on constantly, but the screen doesn’t come on,
no sound can be heard ie: - HDD or cooling fan.

Hello Benarca,

If the LED's illuminate with no display to the LCD panel then there is a good chance that the fault is related to the GPU, though only a rework test would prove this conclusively.

If you would like us to examine your laptop then please let me know.

Best wishes

Hello Benarca,

Well that is not good news is it.

As you paid by credit card you will now need to pursue what is known as a "Section 75 refund" from the card company.

In the absence of the retailer the card company is jointly and severally liable with the retailer and so they will have to make an offer of a resolution.

There is a template letter on this forum that you should send to the card company and that is here:- Letter_to_CC-2.pdf

You should download that, edit it with your details and then you should send it to the card company via recorded delivery.

Please ensure that you keep copies of the letter and postal receipt.

Once the card company respond back to you please pop back here and let me know what they say and I will advise further.

I hope the above helps.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

EDIT:-

After doing some checking I notice that the Directors of PC Nextday are also directors of a company called CMS Computers Limited, who just happen to be the company which assemble the Zoostorm laptops.

Their details are as follows:-

CMS Computers Ltd
4 Hardwick Grange
Woolston
Warrington
Cheshire, UK
WA1 4RF

Telephone Numbers:
Sales: 0844 800 6100
Customer Services: 0844 800 6121

http://www.cms-computers.co.uk

The Director of the company is a Mr Ian Robb Fraser

Whilst their address is listed as the above, their 2010 Company Accounts lists the address as Unit 20 Glacier Buildings whilst the PC Nextday address is Unit 19.

In fact, in their 2010 Accounts which they have submitted at Companies House it states:-

Quote:
Part of the increase in sales is attributed to a shift in trade from PC Nextday Limited, a company under common control,

Finally, here is a quote from the Zoostorm website:-

Quote:
The Zoostorm range is manufactured by CMS Computers Ltd - please visit us on http://www.cms-computers.co.uk

You should give them a call and ask for any one of the above Directors and the quiz them as to what is happening with PC Nextday.

It will be a shame if they have gone as that will leave a lot of customers out in the cold.

I hope the above helps.

Best wishes

Paul
