Hello all,

Ever wondered why Comet's repairs to the laptops keep failing?

Well, one reason could be because they, or their agents, are using refurbished mainboards to repair these laptops.

I was preparing a report today on behalf of a forum member.

When I stripped his laptop down I immediately realised that the mainboard in the laptop was not new and had the Nvidia GPU replaced. This was evidenced by all the flux resin that was around and on the GPU.

After reworking the GPU I booted the laptop to the BIOS to find that the serial number and model number in the BIOS did not match the serial number and model number of the laptop.

What does this mean you may ask?

Well, it means that Comet, or their agents, have been using mainboards that have already failed with the Nvidia defect. These boards have had a new Nvidia GPU fitted but that has failed as well.

How completely wrong and unprofessional is that?

No wonder Comets repairs do not last if this is the quality of the parts that they are using. Is Comet's opinion get the parts for as little as possible to save us as much as possible?

Whatever they reasoning for using these mainboards it is absolutely scandalous that customers are being palmed off with these sub-standard repairs.

Have you had a repair done to your laptop by Comet?

If so, why not check to see if your laptop also contains a previously failed mainboard. To do this simply press the F10 key on your keyboard when you first turn the laptop on and when you see the HP splash logo.

Look for the serial number and product number in the BIOS and make a note of those details. Then switch the laptop off, turn it over and make a note of the details on the white barcode label.

If the two do not match then the chances are you have a refurbished mainboard in your laptop.

What was more scandalous about the above case was the mainboard was of a slightly different specification than what the customer had previously plus it was older.

Yet more evidence, if it were needed, of why you should say a resounding NO to Comet's offer of a repair to your laptop.

Best wishes

Paul
