got this f560 em in 2007 as an insurance replacement for my hp. a couple of months ago my wlan card disappeared (along with other problems) so i bought a new one, fitted it and hey presto-----NOTHING. i downloaded all the relevant updates and chipset settings from hp.------NOTHING. so i finally took it a repair shop who told me something had come loose from the motherboard and it would cost over £100 to repair. they then charged me £25 for this service. does anyone have any ideas what i can do next without too much cost.

Hello Moody and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

You will need to contact the insurance company and tell them that they have supplied you with an inherently defective laptop and that you want a replacement.

I did a quick check on the HP support site to see if I could find anything further regarding your laptop and found this:- http://tinyurl.com/22o5ldf

This is the BIOS update page for your laptop. On the 14th December 2007 HP released an update for your laptop that, according to the HP support site, did the following:-

Quote:
Updates the fan control algorithm of the system to reduce the likelihood of future system issues.

This means that as early as 14th December 2007 HP/Compaq were well aware of the potential for your laptop to overheat - otherwise why issue a BIOS update that switches the fans on 24/7 to the detriment of the battery?

HP really should have told you about this back in 2007 so you could have rejected the laptop if you so wished.

When exactly in 2007 did you receive the laptop?

Please let me know and I will advise further.

Best wishes

Paul

thanks for the reply lapcure. I flashed the bios but i already had that update installed, i think it became more stable after i flashed it before. could you explain in layman terms what has happened to my laptop and why it cant find the wlan card, is there a way of getting it back or not. as i said its 3 years old so isnt worth spending too much on. i've backed up all my files to my desktop in case it crashes completely and would like to upgrade to a mac in the future as they last much longer and less likley to get infected.

Hello Moody,

I would not consider repairing your laptop. The chances are that the laptop will fail again after any repair so you would be wasting your money.

Why don't you pursue a refund or replacement laptop from the retailer where you purchased the laptop?

Can you prove purchase? How did you pay? (cash/credit/debit card)

Please let me know and I will advise further.

Best wishes

Thanks for the advise lapcure,
i probably could find the purchase documents as i am self-employed and keep all my accounts but i cant see any reason to stress out over this laptop. i will probably just get a wireless adaptor and wait till it crashes (or i smash it up) then get a mac.
Keep up the invaluable work and good luck to all the members who go down the compensation route.
i will look in from time to time until then
ciao :!:
