I'm thinking of sending the retailer my own 'engineering report', as I have a fairly good understanding of the problem and I know my GPU is one of the affected models (GF8400M). Is it advisable to unscrew the back panel and send in a photo of the GPU itself? Or just a screenshot showing the device manager and a temperature monitoring util?

To anyone who successfully made a claim against the retailer, what did your engineer's report look like?

Hello Jb476 and welcome to our forum.

Unfortunately the retailer will not accept an engineers report that you have produced yourself even though you have a good understanding of the problem.

The retailer will argue that the report would be biased and that you are not independent.

What problems are you experiencing and who did you purchase from?

Did you pay by credit card? If so then you have extra protection.

Please let me know and I will advise further.

Best wishes

Paul

Well, there is always the chance that even if I do provide a report, things will not work out with the store and I could end up spending that money for nothing. I am lucky enough to have friends who work as computer techs and who have said they would be willing to write some kind of statement. However, I would very much like to hear from people on this forum who have been successful in obtaining refunds or replacements, and just what it was they submitted.

So this is what I ask: Is there a chance someone would be willing to upload a copy of their report for us other victims of this nvidia defect to study?

Maybe this is a lot for me to ask, but after all, I see this a community of disserviced customers teaming up to help each other when the big companies don't want to help, and from what I have read here some of you (sadly not all) were lucky enough to be reimbursed for the cost of your original report so it ended up costing nothing!

Thanks in advance to anyone who replies.

Simply getting a friend who works in IT is not sufficient and the report has to come from a company that is in the business of repairing laptops.

To be fair, anyone can get a friend to write a report and the retailers realise this which is why the report has to come from an independent company.

I would not advise that anyone upload a copy of their report to this forum as this could cause problems and the retailers could then say that future reports have simply been downloaded from the internet.

I hope you understand why I could not allow this to happen.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Hi jb467,
I think you got a cheek asking for a copy of a engineers report, so your friends can do a copy for you

Lapcure: Just wanted to say, the friends I was referring to do work in the business as computer technicians on the hardware side, and that includes repairing both desktops and laptops. I do understand that a report would have to come from someone who does these things professionally and I don't think the retailer would take it seriously if it wasn't.

However, the reason it would be useful for me (and no doubt, many others) to see a successful report would be to know what types of information a retailer accepts as proof. It couldn't hurt to see the format of the report, similar to how there are already several template letters uploaded elsewhere on this forum.

H.FELL: sorry you think that, I'm really just trying to solve my computer problems just like everyone else here :)

Hello jb476,

When you say:-

Quote:
...the friends I was referring to do work in the business as computer technicians on the hardware side, and that includes repairing both desktops and laptops.

Are the employed by a repair company or do they work for a company and simply repair their computers?

The important parts to cover in the report are:-

* Details specific to the item (serial numbers etc).
* Full details of the suspected fault.
* Full explanation and evidence to show why the suspected fault is due to the manufacturer
* Full details of all tests carried out on the item.
* Reasoning behind the final conclusion.

If all the above are covered in the report then you should have no problem in reaching a resolution.

Alternatively you can send it to me and I will produce a report for £65, which includes the cost of the collect and return carriage,

Remember that this amount can be recovered from the retailer as a consequential loss.

I hope the above helps.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul
