I bought my laptop from HP on ebay in summer 2007. It was always running hot and since over a year the only reason it is still working, is because it is undervolted. Otherwise, it overheats and shuts down.

Is there anything that can be done? Can HP replace it for something less faulty?

It is Compaq v6065ea, Turion X2, 6150go

Hello Lockheed and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you are experiencing with your laptop.

Have you been in contact with HP yet? if so what did they say?

When you say that it is running because it is undervolted what did you mean by this?

Are you resident in the UK?

Please let me know and I will advise further.

Best wishes

Paul

Hi, thanks for taking interest in my case.

Some time last year I sent an email to HP but I AFIR it was ignored or the reply was equally useless.

I am running RM Clock program in windows. This software lowers the voltage the CPU is getting at different multipliers.
For example
Low clock: 800Mhz stock voltage is 0.8v (68 Celsius) but after undervolting my cpu runs at 0.66V. (58 Celsius)
High clock: 1600Mhz stock voltage is 1.15v (90 Celsius) but after undervolting my cpu runs at 0.85V (78 Celsius)

Maximal clock for my cpu is 2000Mhz but even after undervolting, computer gets too hot and shuts down.

GPU temperature oscillates between 80 (sleep) and +100 Celsius (3D).

I am a UK resident (London).

Hello Lockheed,

Thank you for your part number, I don't need your serial number thank you.

I have now had a chance to check your part number and found the following:-
http://tinyurl.com/3xhq9hq

This is a BIOS update that HP released for your laptop on the 30th November 2007.

You will note that HP rate this update as CRITICAL.

The reason for the update was to:-

Quote:
Updates the fan control algorithm of the system to reduce the likelihood of future system issues.

Reading further into the HP support site and specifically at the Limited Warranty Enhancement it states:-

Quote:
The new BIOS release for your notebook PC is preventative in nature to reduce the likelihood of future system issues. The BIOS updates the fan control algorithm of the system, and turns the fan on at low volume while your notebook PC is operational.

This proves that as early as 30th November 2007 HP were well aware of the likelihood for the premature failure of your laptop. Otherwise why did they release a BIOS update that switched the fans on 24/7 to the detriment of the battery?

I think that we can say that with the above information the chances are further heightened that your laptop is indeed inherently defective.

The temperatures that your laptop is running at when not underclocked are dangerous and you are lucky not to have received burns.

I would now take action against HP.

If you follow my advice in the step by step guide then you will reach a positive resolution. The guide can be found here:- post13.html#p13

The BIOS update is a superb piece of evidence that will help to bolster your case.

If you have any questions or need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

That is excellent news and I will proceed in hope to get something back in return for my egg fryer.

However, there is one thing I need to ask you. There are parts I replaced in my laptop and they include:
- HDD
- Processor 1.6Ghz -> 2Ghz - the new one is produced in 0.65nm tech so heats slightly less than the old one.
- 4GB ram
- Broadcom wifi card replaced with atheros wifi card. To make this possible, I had to edit the bios to include this card into the whitelist which HP is using to enforce using parts sold by themselves (which are sub-standard, as far as WIFI cards go)

Now, what do you reckon should I do?

Hello Lockheed,

Personally I would advise replacing the parts that were originally in the laptop.

Otherwise HP could claim that it was your parts that caused the problem etc etc.

Also they could quite rightly argue that the laptop is not what it was.

So if you can put their parts back in then I would.

I hope you don't mind me stating this.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Well, I would only be able to replace the Wireless card.
I have no access to the rest of parts.

I would also send them the laptop without the disk, as the data is crucial to me.

There should be no problem with that as this has been done by numerous customers previously.

The only concern is the fact that some of the components are not the originals, although that has no bearing on the fact that your laptop is inherently defective.

Customers are allowed to upgrade their laptops and PC's so your actions are not uncommon or unusual.

I wouldn't worry about the parts that are not the originals, the retailer may not even bother about them.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

The thing is, the retailer is HP as I bought from them directly.
Anyway, thank you for your explicit assistance. I will update this thread with the situation as it unfolds.
