When i say failed, i can charge and turn it on, but the hard disk does not spin up and the screen stays black

Do you hear any noises from the laptop when you switch it on? Do any of the fans spin?

It certainly sounds like it could be the defect but just want to make sure.

Also, would you be able to point me exactly at the relevant section of the Sale of Good Act: specifically the section that states i have 5 years (i'm in in Scotland).

Take a look here:- http://tinyurl.com/6f33plo

That explains things a little better.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Hi there,

Just tried it and the fan does spin, as well as all the lights coming on except for the hard disk light. The battery light also comes on when the battery is inserted.

I emailed play today to see what they said, following your step by step but they told me to get in touch with the manufacturer. Will call them tomorrow to try and get my point across.

Hello Jhebus,

Take no notice when they say contact the manufacturer.

Play.com are 100% responsible for resolving this problem and not the manufacturer so don't let them fob you off.

I am a little surprised though as Play.com are usually very good at handling these problems but then I guess it all depends on who you speak to on the phone/email.

Good luck for when you contact them again.

Best wishes

Hi Paul,

Thanks for that. Just wanted to check if my reply still implies that my problem is due to the defect.

Thanks

Hello Jhebus,

Well, it certainly sounds like the defect and I have seen many laptops that have failed in exactly the same way as yours and they all had the defect.

Of course I cannot state with 100% certainty that it has the defect until it has been inspected as that would just be guess work on my part.

I would say that there is a high probability though that it is indeed inherently defective.

Best wishes

Paul

Hi Paul,

Phoned play this morning, they again tried to get me to go bother the manufacturer, but now say (via an email) that i need to get an engineers report to confirm the defect. I have just registered with your repair site and am awaiting my confirmation email.

This site seems to say that i should try and recover the cost of the report from the company; is this just a suggestion?

Thanks,

Paul

Hello Paul,

The cost of the report is what is known as a consequential loss and so as such this is refundable from the retailer.

I have activated your account and have sent you an email.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes
