Laptop Make: Sony
Model: VGN-Z11VN_B
Purchased From: Direct From Manufacturer
Amount Paid: 1750
Date Purchased: 0- 0-2008
Hello all,

I am an owner of a faulty Sony laptop that has been a pain in my backside for a number of years now. The laptop was bought in either 2008 or 2009 (should still be able to find the original receipts) from a Sony shop. Current issues with the laptop: Overheating - it is only working when the keyboard is taken off from the tray (with all the components on the display). Faulty trackpad/keyboard cable (neither are responsive). Faulty wireless card (sometimes recognized sometimes not). Currently I am running it on Windows 7, however when Vista was installed the laptop used to suffer from blackouts when I tried to play games. My Nvidia graphics card is not detected, instead all I can see in the diagnostic test is the Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset. Audio controller died about a year ago therefore i replaced it. Heat sink paste has also been replaced.

My question is simple, is it possible for me to get compensation for the faulty machine even though I had personally taken the laptop apart numerous times for cleaning and repair purposes ?

Hello ArturR2 and welcome to my forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you have been experiencing with your laptop.

Your model of laptop contains an Nvidia 9300 GPU and whilst this GPU is not as prolific at failing as some of the other Nvidia GPU's laptops containing this GPU are still however failing prematurely.

There is a simple test that can be performed on your laptop that will irrefutably prove the presence of a defect and that is a "hot air reflow". This test will prove whether or not your laptop suffers from a BGA defect. If it does then you will have a claim against the retailer.

The first thing that you need to do is to contact the retailer and to inform them that your laptop is suffering from an inherent defect caused by the BGA underneath the Nvidia GPU.

They may tell you that your laptop is out of warranty and that there is nothing that they can do. You should tell them that the warranty status is irrelevant as you have six years from the date of purchase in which to bring an action against a retailer when the goods in question are inherently defective.

See what they say. If they say they will inspect it for a fee you should refuse and say that due to the "reverse burden of proof" then you will provide your own independent engineers report.

There is a step by step guide on this forum that will help you reach a positive resolution and that is here:- post13.html#p13

If you follow my advice in that guide then you will be successful.

I hope the above helps.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes
