Hi,
I've started getting problems with my Acer Aspire 7520 laptop.
I've been reading about other peoples laptops that keep rebooting but won't start.
When I try to start mine the screen flickers between the normal boot up and a blank screen then in between the flickering I can see it says it's going into stand by,
and it switches off.
The power light goes from green to amber.
I bought this on Tesco's website so I had to use my mates credit card and I gave him the cash. (don't have a credit card myself) So its to much hassle trying to make a claim against Tesco I'd rather fix it if possible.
Does this sound like the dodgey nvidia chip?If so can the chip be replaced on it's own or would I need to replace the motherboard and chip?Is it soldered in?
Any help would be great or if anyone could point me to walk through on doing this kind of repair.
Thanks,
Fangy

Hello Fangy and welcome to my forum.

Sorry for the delay in my reply.

That doesn't sound like the Nvidia defect as you have stated that you can see that the laptop is going into standby mode.

Do you have an external screen that you can plug the laptop into to see if it displays correctly?

When you say it flickers between normal mode and a blank screen do you see the Acer logo at boot time?

If you press the F2 key at boot time does the laptop go into the BIOS correctly?

Please let me know the answers to the above and I will advise further.

Best wishes

Hi,
Thanks for getting back to me.
I unplugged my pc monitor and plugged it into the only socket that's the same shape.
The one on the left side toward the back. But there was no picture. I don't know if this is the right socket or not.
Todays the first day I've started the laptop since I posted my question here.
It started up no problem and stayed on for about 10 min, then it went into stand by.
I left it for 5 mins or so and tried again this time it stayed on a little longer before going into stand by.
When it's booting up everything starts and loads like normal, but once it goes into stand by if you try to start it up straight away it'll just instantly go back into stand by.
I tried pressing f2 during start up and it went into BIOS no problem.
Any help you could give me would be great.
Thanks.
Fangy

Hello Fangy,

Thank you for the update.

From what you have stated I can say that it is definitely not the Nvidia defect that is causing the problem you are experiencing.

If you let the laptop go into the BIOS how long does the BIOS screen stay on for?

If it stays on for longer than than the ten minutes that you have stated then I would say that the problem is Windows related rather than a hardware problem.

Have you tried to perform a Windows reload to see if this resolves the problem?

When you plugged in the external monitor did you do this BEFORE you switched the laptop on?

If not then you should try again and this time ensure that you connect the monitor first the switch the laptop on to see if there is an image displayed.

Please try the above the pop back here and let me know how you get on.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Hi,
I done what you said and put the laptop into the Bios setting, It stayed on that for 5 to 10 mins then started flickering as though it was trying to shut down. When I got it out of BIOS it went straight into stand by.
I reconnected the laptop to my monitor and started it but nothing displayed on the screen only on the laptop.
Do you think re installing Windows would help?
Thanks.
Fangy.

Hello Fangy,

If your screen is flickering in the BIOS then the problem is not related to the Windows Operating System so reloading Windows will not help.

It is apparent that there is a hardware issue but as to what is causing it is difficult to determine without seeing it.

Does this occur with the AC Adaptor plugged in?

If so, is the battery charging LED illuminated?

The reason I ask is that if the battery power was low then the laptop would go into standby mode before the battery ran out.

If you remove the battery and just plug the AC Adaptor in and then press the F2 key at boot time so that the laptop goes into the BIOS does the screen still flicker as before?

Please let me know.

Best wishes

Hi,
I took the battery out and started the laptop on the mains,
It sat on the BIOS screen again for about 10 mins then started flickering on and off.
When i pressed enter to let it start, I could see in between the on and off it saying it was going into stand by.
I also tried it while charging, the battery light comes on and it still goes into stand by.
Do you have any idea what bit of hardware might be causing this?
I wouldn't know where to start.
Thanks for all the help.
Fangy.

Hello Fangy,

One of the things that can cause this to happen is a defective lid close switch.

One of the options in the power settings is what to do when the lid is closed. There are several options and one is to place the laptop in standby mode.

If you can get the laptop to stay on long enough you may want to try changing the setting. One of the options is "do nothing". See if this makes a difference.

If the problem you are experiencing is not related to the lid close switch then I would say it is a component fault which you would probably not be able to resolve yourself.

If it is not the lid close switch then I could repair it for you at a cost of £65 which would include the cost of the collect and return carriage.

Try the above first and then pop back here and let me know.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes
