I bought this laptop in July 2008 after I got a refund for a DV6355ea from Tesco, after it had 4-5 blank screen failures in its first 12 months. They reluctantly allowed me to reject the item as neither they nor HP were able to give me an explanation.

They assured me that I should not have a problem with the TX2130 as it was a different model of Pavilion. Just over 6 months it started to overheat and after 1 year the touchpad and wireless failed. HP were NOT interested as it was a few days over the year warranty and offered to fix it for a fee. I politely refused and found that all I need to do was install new drivers and the configuration utility to enable the wireless.

Around May 2011 I had the blank screen on startup with the 3 beeps. The same as on the DV6355 and realised there was some pattern. HP had previously advised that I should remove the battery and power plug and hold the power on switch for 60 seconds to drain the residual power. If that failed they had suggested removing the battery and reseating it. None of which worked. So I followed the bubble wrap method to effect a simple reflow of the solder bumps that I had seen on YouTube. This worked and the laptop was back to life.

However, it did not last long and by July I had the same blank screen problem and so decided to contact Tesco to make a claim. I was initially told that the system was of warranty and when I mentioned Sale of Goods Act they told me to complete an Out of Warranty claim form. I spoke to their technical support at length about the issues and listed touch pad, wireless, over heating, rebooting and blank screen as issues.

The laptop was sent to Mercom, Dorset by Tesco to investigate. I spoke to both Tesco and Mercom to make it clear that the laptop was working after a temporary fix to enable me to get the data off. I was assured by Tesco that it should be fine and Mercom suggested I write a report and plait with the keyboard for the engineer.

The laptop was returned to me in October with just a deliver note. I had to argue with Tesco Technical Support to get an idea of what had been found and done. They simply told me that Mercom found issues with the Touchpad and re-installed both touchpad and wireless which sorted that out and they did a soak test which showed the laptop to be running hot, so they opend it and cleaned it and this too was resolved.

An argument pursued as to what was done with the blank screen issue and all that Adrian, the Technical support manager kept on repeating was that Mercom had tested the laptop and returned it in working conditiion, even though it was working when sent to them. He simply felt that the black screen did not need specific investigation as it was probably done by Mercom.

In January 2012 the laptop failed again and so I contacted Tesco. It has taken me 4 months of Telephone calls and writing letters trying to understand why Adrian felt that they now needed me to send a fault report before they would look at it again. I found out from Mercom that Tesco never logged the rebooting or black screen fault and I telephoned Exective Response at the Cheshunt Head Office 01992 632222 to complain. They are now willing to look at the laptop and repair it, as long as this does not exceed £140, which is what they say it is worth. I understand that for a laptop of 3-4 years they only give 20%, which I insisted was not acceptable.

They are now willing to get Mercom to look at the laptop for repair and if it cannot be repaired for whatever reason they will return the laptop to myself for a claim in the small claims court. They will only offer the £140 if a problem is found and cannot be repaired, but they will keep the laptop. I feel that this would mean they come out even after the sell the laptop and I would have nothing to show for the £460 invested.

I have my concerns about Mercom as they did not know about the NVIDIA fault, failed to read my report and working for Tesco they cannot be seen to be independent. I know a number of companies that will repair the laptop by re-soldering, re-flowing or replacing the motherboard. I would like some advice as to if any these options are worth while.

Hello Tony and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of all the problems that you have been experiencing.

Take absolutely no notice of Tesco when they state that your laptop is only worth £140. According to the refund calculator available on this forum the minimum refund you should be offered, based on the information in your profile, is £349.50.

The refund should be based on six years which is the time limit you have to bring a claim under the Sale Of Goods Act and the Limitations Act.

I would not allow Tesco, Mercom or anyone else repair your laptop unless they can give you a written guarantee that the parts to be used will be free from the defect.

The trouble is, the defect affects spare parts as well as laptops in the field so there is a real chance that the board to be used will also be inherently defective.

As you correctly stated, Mercom work for Tesco and so cannot be deemed as being independent so you would be wise to obtain an engineers report from a company other than Mercom.

I personally would not pay for the laptop to be repaired and would instead pursue Tesco for a refund.
