Hi

Need your help I brought a HP laptop from Tesco, on the back the laptop it appears to have two model numbers:

It says its a DV6500

Then below on service tag it says DV6527ea

So does this lap top the Nvidia Defect? It started having problems about 18 months ago all of which are discribed on this site. I replaced the screen about 12 months ago! Then it would switch it self off at strange times, so i replaced it.

I tried to use it a couple of weeks ago and it constantly switchs off now.

Bearing in mind I brought it in 2007 is it worth making a claim against Tesco Direct??

Thanks Ed

Hello Ed and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you have experienced with your laptop.

Your laptop contains an Nvidia 7150 GPU which whilst not as prolific as the 8400 and 8600 GPU's is still failing in large numbers.

When you say it would switch itself off do you mean the screen or the laptop?

If you mean the screen, does it just go dim? In order to test this turn the lights down in the room that you are in and stare hard at the screen. Can you see a faint image?

You have also stated that "it" constantly switches off now. Sorry, but do you mean the laptop or the screen?

Please let me know and I will advise further.

Best wishes

Hi Paul

Thanks for the reply.

My Laptop switches it self off constantly, I switch it on using the power button and it switches off within less than a second. All the blue lights light up and then it dies. I replace the battery thinking it was a battery issue last weekend, which had no effect.

Regards Ed

Hello Ed,

From the information you have provided it could well be the defect but it would be wrong of me to state that it definitely is when in fact the problem could be caused by a failed component.

Because of the nature of the manifestation of your particular fault only an inspection will reveal the true cause.

In your case I would advise having the laptop inspected before starting a claim as there is a chance that it may not be the defect.

Once an inspection has taken place if it is proved that the failure is due to the Nvidia defect then you would be able to start your claim with confidence.

If you would like me to inspect your laptop then please let me know.

I hope the above helps.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Hi Paul

Thanks for the speedy reply:)

Its had the line on screen.....fault in the past! Which is one of the common faults due to the Nvidia defect!

Sure an inspection may well be the way forward....how much would this cost? I guess I need to weigh this cost against what I could get in the form of compensation from Tesco? Would I be able to claim the costs for inspection back from Tesco on top of their normal offers of compensation?

Thanks Ed

Hello Ed,

The cost of the inspection would be £65 which includes the collect and return carriage. If it is found not to be the defect then you would only pay £20 for the carriage.

If it is the defect then the cost of the report is fully recoverable from Tesco as a consequential loss.

This would be in addition to the refund that you would receive.

If you would like to calculate the minimum refund that you would be legally entitled to then please see here:- calc

If you would like to book your laptop in for an inspection then please see here:- need-an-independant-engineers-report-t62.html

I hope the above helps.

Any questions please let me know,

Best wishes
