Hello,

Can somebody please advise me in what to do. I own an Hp dv9700 with nvidia 8600M GS, which I purchased directly from HP, because I customized it. The computer cost me $1,487. Three days ago, the computer didn’t boot and a black screen appeared. I tried to boot it with an ubuntu in a flash drive, and it worked. I tried to save the info from my hard drive, suddenly the screen looked distortional and it shut down. After a few hours I tried to turn it on, and it booted correctly but a few minutes later a messages appeared saying something about a failed nvidia driver. I restarted it but it has never boot again.

The computer starts, but the screen is black. The caps lock light turns on if I press the button, the fan starts and sound all right, but it won´t boot.

After a long, long search, I´ve come up with many boards and blogs about nvidia defect. Apparently the settlement ended in March 2011. However, it seems really unfair to pay 1500 $ and loose my money for a defect graphic card.
Please someone help me, with any solution to my problem. If you know a way to fix this, or where to call to get support, please, please help me. My computer is my work and I´m desperate.

Thanks a bunch

Hello Memimurillo and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

The problems you describe are manifestations of the defect so coupled with the fact that your laptop contains an Nvidia 8400 GPU, which is one of the more prolific of the defective GPU's, then I would say it is highly likely that your laptop is indeed inherently defective.

One of the problems is that you didn't purchase within the UK so you are not covered by the Sale Of Goods Act which would make your claim that much easier.

As a result I am unable to advise you on your legal rights as I am not familiar with the law in your country. Furthermore this can change from State to State which makes things more difficult.

I would contact HP and would tell them that your laptop has failed due to the inherent defect in the Nvidia GPU. I would also tell them that you are aware of the Class Action and that this is a wordwide problem.

See what they say and if they try to fob you off you should tell them that you are prepared to sue them if they do not comply and that you are more than confident of being successful if your case were to proceed to court.

I would also advise that you seek some free legal advice to see what avenues are available to you.

I am sorry that I cannot advise on the law and I hope you understand.

Good luck and please keep us updated.

Best wishes

Paul

Thanks Paul,

I purchased the computer in the Florida, United States. I will call, and let you know what they say. Thanks, at least I know that I´m not the only one.
