Hi there Pistolplayer and welcome to the forum.

It's unlikely that you'll be able to claim for the OS upgrade as they will say that it could be used on another PC. They may say the same about the ram upgrade but there's a very small possibility that you might be able to argue that you couldn't re-use it in a newer laptop.

Tesco will probably ask you to complete an out of warranty claim form (although they'll probably try to get rid of you at first by saying that it's outside of the guarantee period).

Let us know when you hear back from them.

Hello Pistolplayer and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

You have stated that you upgraded the RAM to 4 GIG. Can you remove this in order to use it in another laptop?

Also, if you have Windows 7 Ultimate then if you remove it from the current laptop then you would be able to use it again on another laptop.

I would therefore have to say, as Ciderboy quite rightly pointed out, that it is unlikely that Tesco will refund you for those items.

Have you contacted Tesco yet and if so what have they said?

Please let me know and I will advise further.

Best wishes

Paul

Hi there,
I was given your site details by an IT contact who sorts out my computer needs.
My "Acer Aspire 7520 laptop gave up the ghost on 18-01-2012, it contains a 384mb nVIDIA GeForce 7000m TurboCache graphics chipset
I consulted "PCWorld and my IT contact and it was suggested that my laptop is one of those that suffers from the inherent defect. When attempting to start it the start light illuminates and a fan sound starts for about 2-3 seconds and then it shuts down and repeats the attempted startup again and again and again until it is stopped by the only means possible, disconecting from the mains and removing the battery.
I purchased it from Tesco Direct via the net on 28-11-2007 at a price of £399 and collected it from one of their stores on the 30-11-2012. I did have the hard drive replaced a year or so ago when it faultered(may have been down to heat, didn't realise at that time), upgraded it to a faster and higher capacity model (I can get details of that from the installer) For the last 2-3 years I have always used it with a triple fan base unit under the laptop as found that helped keep it cooler and caused less crashing, (probably why its lasted longer than other peoples).
Can you confirm if mine is one of those found to contain the faulty/defecteive chipsets .??

Hello Chris and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

Your laptop contains an Nvidia 7000 GPU (GPU REV MCP67MVA2) which is widely reported as being defective and is failing in large numbers.

I have inspected a number of the same model of laptop as yours and they were all found to be defective.

Because of the type of manifestation you are experiencing there is no immediate evidence that points directly to the Nvidia GPU.

Power cycling can be caused by the GPU especially when it is an MCP chip which yours is, but it can also be caused by other issues, such as failed components.

If you are handy with a screwdriver then there is a quick and easy way to prove that the defect exists in your model of laptop.

First, remove the battery and AC Power.

Next, remove the large panel on the underside of the laptop.

You will then see 2 heat sink assemblies. One is for the CPU and the other is for the GPU. You will need to remove both of these in order to be able to access the Nvidia GPU.

Once the GPU is accessible you should heat it for around sixty seconds with a hair dryer on its hottest setting.

When that has been done allow the GPU to fully cool before re-assembling your laptop.

If the laptop displays an image again then the defect has been proved and you can proceed with your claim.

If the power still cycles that it is likely to be related to component failure rather than an inherent defect.

If you feel happy with trying the above then it is worth a go. If not then please let me know and I will advise further.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul

Hello Chris.

The panel that you need to remove is the large one on the back right edge (with the hinges to the back).

I managed to find an image for you on Google and that is here:-

Image

You can see the panel that needs to be removed as the fan assembly etcetera is exposed. Please disregard the writing on the picture.

I hope the above helps.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

I puzzled it out, removed panel, had to remove fan to get to be able to remove heatsink assembly.
Heated GPU as you advised, left to cool, reassembled in reverse order.

Now when attempt start up it does same as before except now the fan is not attemptin to start like it was before.

Still tries to start, 2-secs, shuts off, tries to start again, etc, etc,

Any idea as to component that might cause that.??

Hello Chris,

Well it could well be that the hair dryer is not getting hot enough to make a difference. Ideally a heat gun or rework tool would be used but not everyone has one of those lying around.

The problem could be caused by a component failure but it would be very difficult to be able to say which component has failed without testing them.

At this stage though I would see if you have a claim against the retailer.

Have you contacted Tesco yet?

Please let me know and I will advise further.

Best wishes
