Hello,

It would not be possible to install a new GPU as the graphics cards in your laptop are pretty specific to your model and there are no alternatives available.

Your laptop contains not one, but two of these cards and both will need to be replaced to ensure that the defect has been fully removed.

You have stated in your post that the GPU is on the motherboard but actually in your laptop both GPU's are on removable cards so you would not need a new motherboards, only new cards.

Stick with bashing Toshiba for a solution and don't let them fob you off.

Be persistent and stick to your guns and you will be successful.

I hope the above helps. Any questions please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Hi Paul,

Thanks for clearing that up.

So just to clarify something, it is possible to install replacement Graphics cards 'without' the inherent defect for my laptop?

As I was under the impression all of the graphics chips 8600M GT (those suitable for my machine specifically) were effected. Are there updated chips without the defect?

Hello,

Well there are some non-defective GPU's in the market place, but these are GPU's only and have to be incorporated onto the graphics cards.

This involves removing the old GPU and reballing the new GPU in its place.

This process is not, by any means, as reliable as the GPU's that are incorporated at the point of manufacture.

It is unlikely that the boards that will be used to repair your laptop will contain one of these new GPU's and will, in all likelihood, contain one of the older GPU's.

It could be that Toshiba are indeed using these new GPU's, but only Toshiba could confirm whether or not this is the case.

I hope the above helps.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Hi Paul,

Extremely sorry for my late response to the outcome of my case, I have unfortunately had to deal with some personal issues that have taken 5 months to resolve.

Anyways, I hadn't forgotten to get back to you regarding my case and the final outcome. I am extremely please to say that I was able to get my laptop fully repaired and returned to me in January. Having spoken with Toshiba regarding their offer of a repair, I decided to take it up. Toshiba repaired the laptop and ensured me that if a similar problem happens again they will not shy away from their responsibility and that I can come back to them. The parts used were not guaranteed of being "free from the defect" as they denied any wrong doing but seeing as though the repair itself would cost nearly a 1/3 of the laptop's original cost, I felt that this was a good offer.

As you mentioned a pro-rata refund would not really go much towards a new machine of similar specs and it may also seem unreasonable in the eyes of the courts to reject their offer of a repair.

I have to say Toshiba has dealt with my case with great professionalism and everyone I have spoken with the technical team, customer service and even the manger who dealt with the case have been great. I always trusted the brand and what it represented, I have always held the products very highly and having dealt with other manufactures with various products, I have always felt Toshiba have looked after their customers even when things go wrong, which is the ultimate test of customer service.

I could not have achieved any of this if it was not for your excellent help, advice and the information on this forum, so a massive THANK YOU! It's great to have my machine back working again, I honestly thought I would not see it again after I sent it to them. It pays to know your rights as a customer and with perseverance you can do it. To all those of you out there looking to make a claim or in the process of one, be patient, persistent and you will come out with a successful outcome. It took me 5 months, but here I am thanks the help of Paul and all those who contributed to this forum with their individual stories.

Good luck to all of you out there still striving for a successful outcome! :!

Best Wishes.

Regards,
FreshMaverick.

Hello FreshMaverick,

Well done on your success. :! :! :! :!

I am really pleased that you have managed to reach this positive outcome.

Nvidia defect aside I always rate and have always rated Toshiba laptops for their durability and quality and I always recommend them to my customers on a daily basis as being the most reliable.

I cannot say that about any other brand and it is a shame that Toshiba laptops were affected by this problem.

You made the right decision in accepting a repair and fingers crossed that your laptop now gives you years of unhindered use. :x :x

I am really pleased that you found my forum and that I was able to help you reach this very positive resolution.

Good luck and best wishes for the future.

Paul
