Hi, I have a Sony VGN-FZ21E with a 8400 GT which is on the list acknowledged as defective on the Sony Website and offering free repair within 4 years.
It is just over 5 years old and bought from Comet on credit card for £625 ex display.
The symptoms are distorted graphics and pink tinge to screen. I tried it through an external monitor and the colour was ok so I thought maybe screen or cable fault. when I disconnected the monitor the screen on the laptop was ok again for a few minutes but returned to the fault though with an occasional good display.
There is no change in the distortion if I gentle pressurise or flex the screen or move the hinges so I am back to suspecting the Nvidia chip.
Body of laptop gets very hot but speedfan causes blue screen 0x0000019 eroor.
Any suggestions please?

Hello and welcome to my forum.

Please accept my apologies for the delay in my reply - a very hectic few days recently.

The problems you describe are symptomatic of the Nvidia defect so I would say it is highly likely that your laptop has the defect.

Furthermore Sony have admitted to the defect in your model of laptop so that adds further weight to your potential claim.

The good news is that as Comet have ceased trading you can now file a Section 75 claim against the credit card company as they are jointly and severally liable with Comet for the premature failure of your laptop.

You will need to send an initial letter to the credit card company to start the ball rolling.

There is a template letter in the downloads section of this forum which you can download, edit with your details and then send to the credit card company.

That letter is available here:- Letter_to_CC.pdf

Please ensure that you send the letter via recorded delivery and please keep a copy of the letter and postal receipt.

The deadline for making a claim is six years from the purchase date so you are still within time.

In order to calculate how much you would be entitled to by way of a pro-rated refund then please take a look here:- www.nvidiadefect.com/calc

I hope the above helps.

Please keep me updated on your progress.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul

Thanks Paul, I will print out the letter and let you know how I get on.
Have you had many stories on the credit card companies paying out?
Are they likely to need an engineers report or is the Sony admission likely to be enough evidence?

Cheers

Matt

Hello Matt,

There have been many, many instances where the credit card company have paid out for laptops that had failed due to the defect. Simply search this forum and you will find a wealth of evidence.

It is likely that they will want an engineers report to confirm the cause of the failure, though this expense is known as a "consequential loss" and as such you are entitled to a refund of this cost.

They will probably not rely solely on Sony's admission and will want some corroborating evidence to substantiate your claim.

I hope the above helps.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes
