:! I bought a Sony Viao FZ38M from Costco in June 2008, I had have no problems with this machine until October this year when the dreaded graphics defect reared its ugly head. I phoned the Costco Conceirge and after eventually getting them to agree that it was a potential manufacturing defect, I had a 3 way conversation with someone from Sony, Costco agreed to look at the machine, and against all information on here, repair it if neccessary (I know but it worked out ok in the end..). My laptop was picked up at the end of October and a week later it was returned repaired. I received a courtesy follow call from Costo conceirge where I to;d them if it failed again I wouldn't except another repair if they couldn't guarantee it wouldn't fail again.

My laptop worked fine for another 6 weeks or so until the weekend just before Christmas it failed again. I had to wait until Christmas eve to phone Costco again. I was told that the agent would have to pass the problem up the line to her manager and she would get back to me. I received phone call yesterday, 27th from Costco basically saying all they could do was repair it again but as I didn't want this to happen I would have to return the laptop to a warehouse. A quick dash home to pick up my laptop and off to Costco I went.

The nice lady at the refund desk couldn't deal with the problem but she quickly called a manager who could deal with it. After myself explaining the problem and reading the info on their system, the manager tried to say that Costco was exempt from the Sales of Goods Act as they were a warehouse, I didn't think they were as I had a Individual member not a business. Eventually he agreed to a refund and I left Costco £775 better off.. It was a great result and it went better than I really thought it would, I was expecting to have to issue a claim against the Head Office.

I would like to thank all those on this site and thankfully I didn't need to use the info and advice I got from this site.

Proof, if ever it were needed, that repairs to these laptops are wholly unreliable.

In a way it worked out well that you accepted a repair which failed as they may not have given a full refund in the first place.

I am sure you will agree though this is an excellent result and I am really pleased for you.

Well done again and all the very best for the future. :! :! :! :!

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

it was a good result as it wasn't how I was expecting it to go. The other half was pleased as I managed to get 2 new laptops with the refund money.
