Laptop Make: Sony
Model: Vaio VGN-NR38S

Amount Paid: 359

Date Failed: 07 Oct 2012
Hi i've got a Sony Vaio VGN-NR38S and I've had it since 2009, it failed on the first week of october. I emailed tesco, filled in the warranty form and got to where I am now. They sent me a Tesco Money card for £80 which I can ONLY spend it in tesco. They said my technika tv was worth (£35.91) so I phoned because they obviously made a mistake, the item was wrong but it was the correct value. £80 was the most they could offer me and thats all they could do so I asked them why they couldn't repair the laptop? They said it wasn't economically viable for them to do so. I said " I Need a laptop for GSCE's and I don't think that £80 will buy me a new laptop!" She kept saying on and on about how it wasn't economically viable and said about trading standards. Now i'm stuck with a broken laptop and £80 restricted to tesco! I have no plans on spending the £80 until I know I can't go any further.
Please help me on my situation! :'(
Ben.

Hello Ben and welcome to my forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

The GPU in your laptop is the Nvidia 8400 (GPU Revision G86-750-A2) and is one of the more prolific of the defective GPU's.

The same GPU is also incorporated into the following laptops:-

Quote:
Sony VGC-LT2S
Sony VGN-AR51E
Sony VGN-AR51M
Sony VGN-AR61M
Sony VGN-AR71J
Sony VGN-FZ11M
Sony VGN-FZ11Z
Sony VGN-FZ21E
Sony VGN-FZ21M
Sony VGN-FZ38M

Sony VGN-NR21S
Sony VGN-NR21Z
Sony VGN-NR32S
Sony VGN-NR32Z
Sony VGN-NR38S

All the above laptops that are highlighted in red have been acknowledged by Nvidia as being inherently defective. I find it very strange that the other laptops have not been acknowledged yet they contain the self same GPU.

Tesco have been known to issue such a credit in the past and it is wholly unacceptable and is in breach of your consumer rights.

The fact that it is not economically viable for Tesco to repair your laptop is not your problem. If that is the case then you are entitled to a pro-rated refund and to calculate how much you would be entitled to please take a look here:- calc

Based on the information in your profile I have calculated that the very minimum that Tesco should have offered you is £139.61.

When Tesco say "every little helps" they really do mean it and the £80 is way to little to settle for.

I would therefore advise that you send Tesco a letter before action as advised in the step by step guide and would return to them the £80 voucher that they sent you.

There is a step by step guide on this forum that will help you reach a positive resolution and that is here:- post13.html#p13

If you follow my advice in that guide then you will be successful.

Persistence is the key to success and you should not let Tesco fob you off in this way.

I hope the above helps.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul
