HI, i bought an HP Pavilion Laptop dv9827em from Staples in Jan 2009. After about two years of use the battery died, and I experienced the Nvidia Defect although the two were not connected. I did not realise at the time what was going on nor was I aware of the Nvidia Defect.

I bought an external fan which has done a wonderful job of keeping the temperature down for about a year. I use the Laptop for Karaoke so I had to keep it going. I tried to use it for a Karaoke night on Friday 14th . I forgot to plug in the power cable and the battery only works for a short time so it was after the computer ran out of battery I plugged into the mains and restarted I had no screen after that, until the next morning when the computer worked perfectly all day. Next morning , blank screen. Tried again in the afternoon, no problems. I cannot depend on it.

I am going to talk to Staples and I will take as much info as I can find on your excellent website to support my claim. I still have my receipt. :nh

Hello Jack and welcome to my forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

Your laptop contains an Nvidia 8400 GPU (GPU revision G86-730-A2) which is one of the more prolific of the defective GPU's.

The same GPU that is incorporated into your laptop is also present in the following laptops:-

Dell XPS-M1530
HP DV9700
Samsung NP-R70T001SUK
Samsung NP-R70A007/SUK
Samsung NP-R70A004/SUK
Samsung NP-R700-AS003/UK
Samsung NP-R700-AS01/UK
Sony VGN-FZ18M
Sony VGN-FZ21S

The above laptops are just a tiny faction of those that contain the same GPU. All the laptops that are highlighted in red have either had a BIOS update that switches the fan on continuously or, in the case of the Dell and the Sony's, have been publicly acknowledged as being inherently defective.

It is excellent news that you purchased from Staples as they are one of the best companies on the high street so you should have no problem in reaching a resolution with them.

There is a step by step guide on this forum that will help you reach a positive resolution and that is here:- post13.html#p13

If you follow my advice in that guide then you will be successful although knowing Staples you will probably not need the guide.

I hope the above helps.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes
