I bought a Sony Vaio October 2007. It has always seemed rather warm/hot, but in my ignorance I didn't know this was unusual until a friend commented on it. Apart from that, no symptoms until a black screen in January this year, but the laptop started up again ok afterwards, so I still thought nothing of it because Windows computers always seem to be problematical. But I noticed that the laptop does seem to be running even hotter than usual. Then I read about this website in a Mac forum and now I'm wondering if the Sony heat issue is due to a defective chip and is on the way to complete failure. The chip is 8400M GT. Any info greatly appreciated.

Hello Catcher and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems that you are experiencing with your laptop.

The good news is that Sony have admitted to the defect in your model of laptop and that can be verified here:- http://www.sony.co.uk/support/en/produc ... ions/35880

This means that your claim will be made that much easier.

Do you know what temperatures your laptop is reaching? If so please could you let me know.

If you don't know then there are a couple of utilities on this forum that will determine this and they can be downloaded here:- tools-to-test-to-see-if-your-nvidia-gpu-is-about-to-fail-t57.html

You should download those, run them on your laptop and then please pop back here and let me know the temperature at idle and the temperature under load.

Please would you also let me know where you purchased the laptop and the method of payment.

Once I know this I will be able to advise further.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul

Thank you for the speedy reply. I'm using my Macbook Pro for this forum, due to the overheating on the Sony, but I will do as you say and post the temperature results. I paid cash, purchased from John Lewis. By the way, I believe I made two similar posts by mistake - I couldn't see my first post and thought it had disappeared into the ether, so I posted again. Sorry.

Hello Catcher,

No problems with the double post - I deleted the other one.

The reason your initial post did not show straight away is because posts are moderated to prevent spam.

You are lucky to have purchased from John Lewis as they are pretty good with the way they are handling this problem so if your laptop is indeed inherently defective then you will reach an unhindered resolution.

Best wishes

GPU-Z shows varying results:

Idle for 1 hour - 65 - 66 degrees

On waking from sleep - 48, going up to 66 after 10 minutes idle

5 minutes of Windows updates/restarts - from 63 to up to 79

During 5 minutes surfing - 73 to 81

Google street view - 81

I don't use the laptop for much other than emails and surfing. Are these temperatures what you would expect?

Hello Catcher,

The temperature at idle is okay though the temperature under load is a little high but it is not excessively high.

The fact that your laptop is running a little hot does not necessarily mean that it is failing. It could be due to a blocked fan or grille. It also could be due to dried thermal paste.

Unless your laptop displays a manifestation of the defect then you would be unable to pursue a claim at this stage.

You may want to have the fan and grille gleaned and you may also want to replace the thermal paste. This should then enable your laptop to run cooler.

If you start to witness artefacts in the display or if the display goes completely then please pop back here and let me know and I will advise further.

I hope the above helps.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes
