Hi Paul

Happy New Year to Lapcure and all members of the Forum.

My wife's Sony has a NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT GPU. Recently the laptop has lost its wireless conection on 8 to 10 occassions a day, at the same time the screen becomes very faint and the "egg timer" keeps running. If any windows are open at the bottom of the screen, click on one and you have access again, the faint window stays open but can't do anything with it. To close the faint screen she needs to restart the computer or use Windows Washer which shuts down all the windows (task manager doesn't work). If restarted we get the message "your last browser session ended unexpectedly........" My Toshiba behaves so I doubt there's a problem with the BT Hub.

Because of the problems with my Granddaughters HP (resolved with your help) I am very nervious of any laptop with a NVIDIA GPU.

Paul, what do you think? am I just being paranoid.

Bought from Marks & Spencer October 2008 for £698
Thanks

Mike Turner

Hello Mike,

When it loses the wireless connection does the wireless card still appear in the Device Manager?

Have you considered performing a factory restore to see if it is a problem with the operating system?

If you continue to experience problems after the restore then I would say that things are not looking good.

Due to the fact that you have an 8400 GPU in your laptop, which is one of the more prolific of the defective GPU's, then I would say that you should keep your fingers crossed.

What is the VGN number of your grand daughters laptop? This should be on a little label on the lower right hand side of the screen fascia.

I would certainly do a backup and system restore and take it from there.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul

Hello Mike,

I think on your model of laptop you press F11 when you see the HP Logo.

If that doesn't work try pressing F8 when Windows boots and from the menu select the repair option.

Then, when that loads there will be a menu. From the menu there should be an option which says something like restore hard drive. You should select this option.

I hope the above helps.

Best wishes

Dear Paul

Sorry to bother you again. My wife has tried numerous remedies but is still having problems which seem to be occurring quite often every day.

Screen freezes and goes faint sometimes circle keeps keeps running and in both instance the only solution is to turn the laptop off.

My wife thinks there may be a problem with Google Chrome and AVG. I've ruled this out because my Toshiba has no problems although it runs on Windows 7. My wife's runs Vista Home Premium.

Got to the stage it needs sorting.

I think the best bet would be for Lapcure to look at the laptop to see what the problem is and hopefully fix it.

What do you think?

Kind Regards

Mike

Hello Mike,

Sorry to hear that you are still experiencing problems with your laptop.

I will be happy to take a look at it for you and if it can be repaired without the need for major parts then the cost would be £65 including the collect and return carriage.

If this is good with you then please take a look at the following post:- need-an-independant-engineers-report-t62.html

Whist that post refers to obtaining an engineers report I have used it as it will guide you through registering with ourselves at our Lapcure website.

When booking the laptop in if you state that you want the laptop repairing then this is what will be done.

I hope the above helps.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul
