Hello fellow sufferers, when I bought my HP pavilion dv6000 laptop back in early 2008 I thought I was buying a quality product, it certainly appears glossy and well made enough, when it was only eight months old the wireless seemed to disappear, a call to HP soon had a courier taking it away for a new motherboard and all was well until December 2009, when the wireless again disappeared, undaunted I plugged in a USB wireless dongle and soldiered on, then in January 2010 I got the dreaded three beeps and blank screen, a little googling (on a ten year old Medion laptop bought from Woolworths that has never ever missed a beat) revealed that I was not alone, an email to HP told me that my machine was not eligible for the extended warranty, which surprised me, on a couple of occasions the machine would start but got progressively worse, more googling found me a forum discussing the problem at length and an outlandish fix, heres a link to the forum.
http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-3518 ... rd-problem
So I took my non functioning laptop out to my garage, the first step was to take my airline blow down gun (air in a can will do) and blow through the vent on the back of the machine, a small cloud of dust issued from the fan grille, as a smoker with two lovely cats I was expecting this, back indoors again, powered up and got the usual three beeps, powered off, removed battery, removed hard drive, plugged in power lead, opened screen and wrapped keyboard in two thick towels and a fleece jacket, ensuring that the cooling vents were all obscured, the idea of this is to make the machine overheat to the point that it automatically shuts down, power on and leave alone, after an hour the machine was still running, though putting a hand inside the bundle revealed it was hot in there, I powered off and left it all alone for a couple of hours to cool, re insert the drive and battery and voila! a working machine complete with wireless, how long it will last I will let you know, but it has given me time to back up all my stuff and to install the temp checking software mentioned on this site I am now cruising at 49Celsius. My next move is to obtain a refund from the seller (who seem to have changed hands)
This may not be a permanent fix but it was easy and has enabled me to recover my files. What have you to lose?

Hello Stewart and welcome to our website.

The fix you talk of is similar to a rework except it doesn't last very long.

Depending on how many solder bumps have failed on your chip will determine how long the laptop will work.

I would give it a few days. You may be lucky and get a bit longer, but it is not a permanent fix.

If the retailer where you purchased the laptop has changed hands then you may be out of luck in securing a refund.

It all depends on whether the new owner took the business on as a going concern or if he started it as a new entity.

How did you pay?

If you paid by credit card then you would have more protection.

Good luck with the retailer, if you need any help or advice then please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul

Hi thanks for the reply, the repair lasted one startup :D thankfully long enough to retrieve my files, yes the seller linky http://www.morgancomputers.co.uk/Contact/contact.asp
Apparently went into receivership in November 09 and although the website etc is the same they have given me the address of the receiver, I am unsure whether I can have any redress there or whether I might just be joining a list of creditors, I did buy the machine using a credit card but recently closed my account with them, however as they just sent me a statement I may still be in luck, how does that work? I now know I bought the machine in spring of 2008

Hello Stewart,

Well you will have no redress against the retailer then as they have gone into liquidation and so that door is firmly closed.

You can however chase the credit card company.

There is a template letter available in the downloads section of this forum that you should send to the credit company.

That is available here:- letter-to-credit-card-company-when-retailer-ceased-trading-t249.html

You should download that, edit it with your details and send it to the credit card company via recorded delivery.

Please ensure that you keep a copy of the letter and the postal receipt.

If you do not receive a positive response within fourteen days then you should proceed to obtain an engineers report on your laptop.

Please let me know if you get to this stage as this is a service we can help with.

Even if you had already closed your account they would have still been liable to you.

Start off with the above and see how you get on.

If you need any help or advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Possible good news, the company was acquired by another company still trading, they have an ebay shop and actually are selling a pavilion similar, refurbished stock, so do they have any liability to me? or should I get on to the apparently still trading Morgan? is this tactical? I will try again with HP as I now know that the machine is definitely under 24 months old from its purchase date.I will make enquiries from my credit card company.

Hello Stewart,

I personally think that you will not get a resolution out of the new trading company or the old Morgan.

I recommend that your best course of action would be to pursue the Credit Card company rather than HP as we all
know that dealing with HP, even when you are in the right, is like banging your heads against a wall for all the good it does you.

You can of course try to get a resolution out of the new/old company but I really think you are wasting your time to be honest.

If you need any help or advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

dv2535ea, graphics prob, i bought three of them over two years ago, two of them (my sons)gave up last year, and i did not do anything about it, but the third one, (mine) has encountered the same issue. I am in a bit of a situation. I am pissed off with HP in as much of their lack of attention to this defect. i believe they recalled laptops with amd chips but not Intel chips.
How do we go about getting these laptops recalled.

Hello Recone.

A repair is not recommended to these laptops.

Some companies do replace the GPU itself rather than the whole board, but this is an expensive repair and is not guaranteed to last.

Others will offer you a replacement mainboard, but as there are so many defective GPU's in circulation who knows which boards contain them and which don't.

If I were you I would steer well clear of a repair.

Best wishes
