My hp tx1250ea bit the dust this weekend. Symptoms in weeks leading up to total failure (i.e. powers up but nothing on lcd screen or external monitor) was periods of loss of one colour on external monitor especially when the machine was getting hot, then last Friday permanent loss of one colour on external monitor although at this stage the laptop screen was still OK. Machine was purchased Jan 2009 as a clearance model, serial no. CNF728800V. I'm pretty certain this is a case of the nvidia GPU failure, what do others think?

I went into Staples yesterday to start the ball rolling and see what they say. They said they will contact their HQ and HP to see what can be done and get back to me.

Hello JP and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you are experiencing with your laptop.

Looking at your serial number I can see that your laptop was manufactured in week 28 of 2007 - right when all the defective chips were being used.

The TX range are plagued with problems and the manifestations of the defect all sound the same those you are experiencing.

How did you pay for the laptop?

If you paid by credit card then you have extra protection.

There is a step by step guide available in this forum that will help you reach a positive resolution and that is here:- post13.html#p13

If you need any help or advice along the way then please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul

Spoke to the Staples store today. Response probably as expected - they had checked with HP who say this model is not affected and does not have extended warranty. Staples Customer Service apparently had no knowledge of this model range being affected. So suggestion was to approach HP for a repair or if I came back with an engineer's report saying failure was due to an inherent fault in the nvidia chip or machine design that would change matters.

So guess what my next step is - a report. I did say I was slightly surprised at the HQ response as I know they have dealt with claims on similar machines. I also made it clear that if the engineers report did finger the nvidia chip, I would not accept a repair unless they gave a written guarantee that a redesigned part not subject to premature failure had been used.

Hello James,

Well Staples sent a letter only recently that stated the following:-

Quote:
Thank you for taking the copy of the receipt to our Shrewsbury store and providing the report from Lapcure, we now have all the paperwork in order to finalise this matter.

I am fully satisfied that this fault is indeed generic and possibly caused when the unit was being manufactured, or an error in design, resulting in a flaw having developed.

Due to the age of the unit we are prepared to authorise a partial discount of £200, this figure is obtained by taking into account the usage of the machine before its resulting failure. This discount would go towards the cost of another computer in store.

Please confirm your acceptance of this offer and which store Mr ****** would like to attend to choose a replacement machine, I can then arrange for the store to have the relevant codes to process the transaction with the discount of £200. We also owe Mr ****** £65 for the report your had produced, we can either add this to the offer, making it £265, or I can refund this separately in the form of a cheque from our Head Office.

Now, whilst this was for a different model to yours, the Nvidia defect is not model specific so the chances are yours is indeed afflicted with the same problem.

Staples have accepted my reports on numerous occasions so once your laptop has been inspected, if it is indeed inherently defective, then you really cannot lose.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul

Could this be the fastest result on record. Thanks to Paul's fast turnaround on the report, I took the report into the York store this morning. They contacted HQ and came back to me in less than an hour to agree to a replacement and refund of the fee for the report. I have been into the store this afternoon and picked up an Acer Aspire 1420P. No hassles, very friendly staff. They have sent a fax off to HQ so just need to wait for the cheque to arrive for the report, but they said shouldn't be a problem and if I don't get it within 10 days to go back in.

I must say Staples made it much easier than I expected and thanks to all the advice and evidence on this site. tx1250 failed 13th June, new laptop 23rd June!

Staples really are to be commended on the way they are handling this situation. Whilst some customers have had minor niggles with them they are on the whole, an outstanding company.

For anyone receiving a cash refund from another retailer and who is looking for a company to purchase from then look no further than Staples.

Well done again and all the best for the future.

Best wishes
