The Nvidia Defect Forum

Hello all,

A forum member was kind enough to forward me a copy of this letter that he received from Comet.

In it Comet have offered a repair and state that the parts will be "free from the Nvidia card"

If you are offered such a repair you should ask for the following:-

1) The Part number of the mainboard being used
2) The graphics chipset on the laptop

Without this we cannot determine if the mainboard being offered is a like-for-like replacement.

What dynamite evidence though that HP "have made new parts to eradicate the fault"

What happened to HP's stance that the problem didn't exist?

I'd say to user the "go for it and post details of the new board and GPU on the forum" and those details could be obtained through GPU-Z and other hardware analysing tools.

The only concern I have for owners like myself and others who have received the same 'offer' is whether or not these parts are fully reliable. Furthermore why should we accept a repair when for the past 1-3 years we have experienced mayhem with these machines; problems like overheating, no wireless, limited to processes due to heat.

Even with the new installed hardware the design of the laptop case is crap and overheating may still come across as an issue. Paul I believe has mentioned it at least once on the forum and I've heard it directly by mouth from other professional laptop engineers.

If the retailer refuses to offer compensation then a small claim will guarantee your money back and additionally the costs + interest for wasted time. Therefore you receive extra on top of what you had originally paid for the machine.

So yes, a repair from my point of view is a bad idea regardless of the guarantee of 'clean' parts from both the retailer and manufacturer.

The second paragraph of that letter:



So what they are implying is that if the product develops a fault caused by the supposed 'clean' replacement part they will offer another free repair?

And the first paragraph:


THE SECOND PARAGRAPH CONTRADICTS THE FIRST PARAGRAPH!!!

Does this mean that Comet are still unsure on whether or not HP have 'clean' parts and are lying through their teeth!?

I would love to see someone have their laptop sent off, returned and despite this 'guarantee' the owner discovers that they replaced nothing and the manufacturer/HP applied a mere heat gun job!

Its my Dv2799ea the letter refers to and trust me the laptops going nowhere until they advise me which parts will be used as I'd be very surprised if replacement parts exist.

HI SURELY THEY CAN'T GET AWAY WITH THIS AS THEY ARE NOW CHANGING THE COMPONENTS OF THE COMPUTER FROM WHAT YOU ORIGINALLY BOUGHT AND THAT COULD'VE BEEN THE REASON YOU BOUGHT IT NOT KNOWING THEY WERE FAULTY AT THE TIME OF COURSE
