Hi Paul,
Thanks for clarifying the chip for myself. Its been seemingly fine though in recent weeks had had the odd lock up and freeze which required a reboot. Yesterday it powered off and when hitting the power button the power light, touchpad on light and power switch and hdd lights light up for around 1-2 seconds then switches back off. No beeps, no screen, no nothing.

On another note, do you know what kind of hard drive is inside the system - am going to look at a solution to hook it upto a desktop system. Thanks again.

Hello Whizard and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear your laptop has failed.

What problems is it displaying?

Your laptop contains an Nvidia Geforce 7000M GPU which is failing in huge numbers.

The chances are that it is very likely your laptop is inherently defective.

If you have any questions or queries then please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul

Hello Simon,

The link to the full specifications for your laptop is here:- http://tinyurl.com/ya5veo4

The problem you describe with the switching off is one of the manifestations of the defect.

I would now waste no time in contacting Tesco and telling them that your laptop is inherently defective.

If you need any advice or have any queries then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Hello Whizzard,

Why wait for the post when you can download a copy of their out of warranty claim form here:- tesco-s-out-of-warranty-claim-form-t296.html

Download that, enter your details and send it to Tesco.

If you need any help or advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

If this is of any interest, here is copy of the letter received from Tesco

Dear XXXXXX

Thank you for your reply and for taking the time to complete the form we sent your help is much appreciated

I’m sorry to learn your Hp Laptop has developed a fault. I understand how disappointing this must be for you.

As you know, we guarantee all our electrical products for 12 months and if an item develops a fault within this time we will be more than happy to offer a full refund or exchange.

Although we believe that the products we sell there are occasions, like this, when a product does not last as long as we would expect. Although this does not happen often, when it does we want to offer our customer the best service possible. This is why we have a process in place that allows us the chance to give our customers a gesture of goodwill towards the original value of the product.

As products like this decrease in value over time, I’m unable to offer a full refund. However I do agree that the laptop should have lasted longer than 20 months therefore I’ve arranged for a cheque to be sent to you for the value of £152.00. It should be with you in the next 28 days.

I understand that my reply maybe a little disappointing to you, but I hope you understand why I am unable to reimburse you the full amount.

Thank you again, for taking the time to bring this issue to my attention and if I can be of any further help to please don’t hesitate to contact me on the above freephone number

Yours sincerely
For and on behalf of Tesco Stores limited

Hello Cushley,

I would reject their offer of £150.
They sold you an inherently defective laptop and now they want to make you think they are doing you a favour by offering you a "gesture of goodwill".

I would tell them that unless they refund you in full or replace the laptop then you will take further action against them.

yep, gone for it, posted the letter today ;)

Wise move.

It is just a matter of batting a few letter back and forth now.

If you require any help or advice along the way then please don't hesitate to ask.

We have already gone out and purchased a new laptop also, and just got the form through today, so now the process begins. Thankfully was able to get a nice little SATA -> USB lead to recover data from the defective laptop's hard drive.

Tesco phoned me last night; eye eye I thougt but it was a survey to see how I'd got on with their resolved Customer Complaint.

I marked them ten out of ten for politeness, but was less generous with my award for "listening and understanding" :D
