Well unknown to me my Sony had the time bomb ticking that is
the NVidia 8400M GT GPU .
And that is what leads me here to http://www.nvidiadefect.com :nh

Well my Sony VGN-AR61M has finally been taken by this faulty chipset
but thanks to spending this morning reading up on the how to section
i at least know i have some serious help at hand :x :) .

Ok my laptop was bought in may 2008 by fiance agreement im
not sure full cost but was around the £900 mark,
Now ive emailed currys this morning asking what step they have
in place to deal with these problems faults and am awaiting a reply
on which im sure will be a long road.

PS Thanks to this site ive been able to disable graphics card and can finally have limited use of my laptop .

Hello Cmoore and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

It is good news that you paid for the laptop on finance because if you cannot get a resolution from Sony then you can claim a Section 75 refund from the finance company.

In situations such as this the finance company are jointly and severally liable with the retailer.

Good luck with the first step and if you need any help or advice then please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul

OK finally had an email giving me a phone number to the technical deparment of currys and
had the following conversation with a very helpful rep.

Currys acknowlegde the Nvidia problem and offer the 2 following steps to help identify and resovle any graphic problems.

1) £50 courier charge and we will inspect your laptop ourselves and if found to have a faulty chip
we will repair and refund your laptop.

2) Get an Indepentant engineers report to back up my claims and sent it to them and we will then repair your laptop.

OK so whats my best option :c

forgot to add they will refund the £50 if my laptop has the decfective Nvidia chip.

Hello Cmoore,

£50 courier charge?

Where are they collecting it from, Cyprus?

That is a huge charge for a courier service. I only pay £10 for a next day collection/delivery.

Do they mean what they say in that statement? The bit where they say that they will "repair and refund your laptop"?

If that is the case then you would be advised to accept that offer as it seems phenomenally generous of them. Although I guess what they mean is that they will repair the laptop and refund the £50. I would clarify that point with them.

They claim that if you provide you own report then they will repair the laptop but they make no reference to the cost of the engineers report. As the cost of the report is a consequential loss then they have no option but to refund it so don't let them try and fob you off with that one.

In both cases they state that they will repair the laptop. This, of course, is entirely up to you but I would recommend that you request the written guarantee that I recommend. If they are prepared to give this then great. If they refuse then you should seriously consider whether you want to accept their offer of a repair or not.

Of the two options if the first option that they gave you is incorrect then I would recommend that you provide your own report.

I hope the above helps.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Ok just off the phone again .

Now Currys Rep say the £50 covers report and courier cost that will be refundable if found to be Nvidia at fault .
On asking what Guarantee will be given if new parts are use to repair , he replied he cant answer until test are done
as they need report done first and then they will be able to tell me what action needs to be taken to repair the laptop.

Hello Cmoore,

Well, it is up to you now as to who you choose to provide you with a report. I have to say, irrespective of how your particular inspection turns out surely they must know what guarantee's they are likely to give and what parts are likely to be used should it transpire that your laptop is indeed inherently defective.

The 8400 GPU is one of the prolific of the defective GPU's so any offer of a repair really must be backed up with a written guarantee.

If you would like us to provide you with a report, as is your legal right, then please let me know and I will advise further.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

I take it that my Sony VGN AR61M with the NVIDIA 8400M GT is one of the worst offenders for failure .

Hello Cmoore,

I wouldn't say that the AR61M is one of the worst offenders for failure, there are many others filing in much larger numbers.

I would, however, say that the 8400 GPU is one of the more prolific of the defective GPU's along with the 8600 GPU.

I hope the above helps.

Best wishes
