Hi

I have had a Sony Vaio VGN-NR32S with a Nvidia graphics card and an Intel Centrino processor for just over two years and I have had so many problems with it such as crashing, refusal to boot up and malfunctioning wireless internet. I have visited Currys for help on numerous occasions and they just repeatedly told me to just use the Vaio Recovery Center to reset the laptop to its factory condition. I have done this each time the problems have occured (about 5 times to date) and now for some reason the Vaio Recovery Center has disappeared. So I now find myself in my final year of university with a laptop that cannot connect to the Internet and no money to get it repaired. Any help or advice you could offer me would be massively appreciated.

Cheers

Darren

Hello Dagsy and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you have been experiencing with your laptop.

Is your laptop currently working?

You stated that you were experiencing wireless problems. Was this just a case of the wireless dropping out or did the wireless card disappear from the Device Manager?

The problem sounds to be hard drive related, have you noticed a serious slowdown in operational speed of the laptop?

Please let me know and I will advise further.

Best wishes

Paul

Hi Paul

The laptop is currently working...barely however, and the network card has dropped from the device manager I think. The laptop actually does slow down a bit aswell but only occasionally. I have heard of similar problems with the same laptop and with nvidia hardware, some via this forum? Is there some correlation do you think or not?

Cheers

Darren

Hello Darren,

Well, from what you describe I would say that your laptop is indeed inherently defective.

The loss of wireless is one of the first manifestations of the defect which is closely followed by the loss of video.

I would say that your laptop is on the fringes of failure and it is only a matter of time.

However, as you already have one of the manifestations the test that we do to confirm the defect would apply and you would be able to proceed for a refund or replacement on that basis.

A repair is out of the question due to the unreliability of spare parts so you should reject any offer of a repair.

There is a step by step guide on this forum that will help you reach a positive resolution and that is here:- post13.html#p13

If you follow my advice in that guide then you will reach a positive resolution.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Hi Paul

I have chased this up with Currys. I am now at the point were they are offering me £280 towards a new laptop. They are saying that there are aware that the one I have cost me £530 but they can only offer me this because it is 25 months old. Is this the most I can hope for? Should I just take this amount?

Darren

Hello Darren,

By my calculations their offer should be in the region of £310.

Their offer of £280 is therefore too low and you should request that they match what you would get if you went to court, which is £310.

What do you think?

Best wishes

Paul

Hi Paul

I think that £310 is better than £280 haha. Is this the best I can hope for in your opinion? Is there little chance of a full refund bearing in mind that it is 25 months old?

I would just like to extend my courtesy for your invaluable help by the way. You have been great

Cheers

It is down to the retailers discretion on whether or not they give a full refund and is not something that is an entitlement.

The courts would also make an award based on usage, unless there were extenuating circumstances or if the retailer failed to turn up at court.

To be honest though I think that there is little chance you would get more and think that you should now draw a line under the matter.
