Hi guys,

First of all, great forum, really good to be able to get this advice when although only 2 years old I was just about ready to scrap my laptop and concede to having to buy another.

I suspect my laptop is experiencing the Nvidia defect problems but wanted a seconds opinion or 2 based on the symptoms!

The other day my laptop briefly blacked out a couple of times and managed to restore the picture. Since then on occasions when I have booted up the following things have occured:

- weird pixellated vertical colourful lines/blocks have appeared on screen, the background has been severly reduced in terms of resolution.
- Screen blacking out
- Laptop simply switching off.

I managed to quickly run GPU-Z before it blacked out this morning and my CPU temp was at 75 degrees.

I have already called curry's support (as I bought it online) and of course they followed the usual procedures. The guy I spoke to said I would need an engineers report - (almost an admission of fault in itself?).

Does this sound like I'm on to the right thing? I don't want to post the letter before action and end up with egg on my face bacause it's something stupid I've managed to do myself! :D

Thanks

Phil

PHenderson,

Welcome to the forum.

Yes it looks like you have the dreaded defect.
My laptop started to fail the same way....them after a short while it failed completely.

But thanks to this site I have just got some money back. Send the letter, it wont hurt. They will only write back and say you need a report, then you can take it further.
And you can always stop at any point.

I am sure Paul on here will tell you the same thing.

Good Luck.

Hi Earlofmarl,

Thanks for the advice, I will certainly send the letter off to them - interesting how you have the exact same model as me and it seemed to last give or take the same period of time before dying!

Phil

Hello Phil and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you have been experiencing with your laptop.

The problems you have described certainly sound like the Nvidia defect. I have worked on so many of these now that I can just abut spot it a mile away.

There is no need for the first letter before action as you have already been given authorisation to obtain an engineers report, which in effect is what the first letter is all about.

I would now obtain a report and would forward Currys a copy. If you would like us to provide you with that report then please take a look here:- need-an-independant-engineers-report-t62.html

There is also a step by step guide to receiving a refund or replacement laptop and that is here- post13.html#p13

If you have any questions or if you need any help then please let me know.

Please keep us updated on your progress.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul
