:nh My Comet Sony Vaio VGN-NR38S/S has suffered from the black screen of death. I took my lap top to Comet after looking at this sight. I was initially advised to speak to Sony which i refused and then i was told that i will need to pay £51+ for an inspection to ascertain whether there is a defect, which i refused.

They have now offered to do a free inspection and i await their findings and their offer.. :x

Neilos,

Be careful with what Comet tell you is the fault - they may just say that the motherboard has failed & you need a new one for £XXX.

cheers cider boy - i'm going to follow the advice and pursure the refund:

You should refuse this. If they insist you should tell them that you will accept the repair on the following conditions.

1) That they provide you with a written guarantee, on company headed notepaper that states the following verbatim:-

"The motherboard being used to repair your laptop is from a completely new batch and is 100% free from the Nvidia defect. If, at any time in the future it transpires that the mainboard is inherently defective due the the Nvidia GPU then a refund or replacement laptop will be offered"

Will the retailer give you such a guarantee? probably not. If they don't then that means they have no confidence in the repair being offered. If that is the case then how can you be expected to accept such an offer?

Hello Neilos and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

It will be interesting to see what Comet report so please pop back once they have inspected it and let us know and I will advise further.

Fingers crossed for you :x

Best wishes

I have the exact same problem with a similar Sony Vaio laptop the VGN-NR31J which has the same GPU "NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT". Don't let them mislead/deceive you because i assure you the fault is with the Nvidia GPU and they owe you a refund.

Did you mean a free repair?

If so then yes, I would ask for the written guarantee.

If they have offered you a free repair without the need for an engineers report that it would seem like you do not need one.

They must have already confirmed the defect otherwise they would not have offered a free repair.

Fingers crossed for you :x

Best wishes

hi paul - must have been half asleep when i wrote that post - it is a free repair rather than a free refund.

Am i right in thinking that i send another letter to Comet Head office re the repair - Comet have advised that i contact Sony direct for the repair.

thanks for all your advice
