Hi Paul,

I paid for the laptop by finance (interest free) from Dabs, which involved a deposit paid by debit card (10% if memory serves me right).

I have proof of purchase in the form of a printed Dabs customer despatch note, which lists the order number and order details - do you think this is acceptable?

Attached are the terms and conditions from the Vaio Plus Warranty Extension booklet, from which I couldn't really tell who I need to follow up the matter of the Warranty with, Dabs or Sony.

Thanks again Paul for all of your help and advice, it's much appreciated. Normally I'd spend a bit more time researching the matter myself, but I'm a bit pushed for time at the moment (as my wife brought our first born son into the world on Tuesday!).

Kind Regards,
Paul.

Hello Paul,

I have looked through the warranty documentation but to be honest there is nothing in there that can help.

What is important is who you paid for the warranty. If you paid Dabs, then it is Dabs who you should pursue for the refund of this amount. If you received a separate invoice from Sony then it would be Sony.

I would bet that you have one invoice showing the laptop and it's price and then the warranty and the price.

If this is the case then it is Dabs who you paid for the warranty and so it is Dabs that is responsible for refunding it. They may try and wriggle and say that it is not their responsibility, but at the end of the day if you paid your money to Dabs then it is their responsibility.

I hope the above helps.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul

Partial success!

After some persistance with Dabs, I have now received a refund for £648.60 (partial refund of £568.65 for my faulty laptop, plus £79.95 for the engineers report).

Dabs have taken legal advice on the issue of the extended warranty and it seems that the contract is between myself and Sony and as they have put this in writing, I am working on the basis that this is correct.

So I have now written to Sony requesting a refund and am awaiting a reply.

I will keep you posted on how I get on, but I'd just like to say thanks again Paul for all of your advice so far.

Paul.

Hello Paul,

Well done on your success so far :! :! :! :!

The next step is Sony.

As Dabs have already refunded you for the inherently defective laptop it is a forgone conclusion that Sony will have to do the same as they cannot legitimately charge you for a warranty on an inherently defective product.

It's looking good for you Paul :! :!

Looking forward to your next update.

Best wishes

Paul

I thought I'd post a quick update as it's nearly 3 months on and I've sent 4 letters to Sony regarding the extended warranty - Sony Belgium (as advised by their website upon selecting the relevant product), Sony UK (Brooklands), Mr. Steve Dowdle (whom I believe has now retired) and Mr. Mohit Parasher (the new Sony MD) but have yet to receive a reply.

What does it take to get Sony to respond!?

It's a poor state of affairs from such a well known company and it's certainly going to make me think twice about purchasing Sony products in future.

I have now e-mailed: kdepauw@vaio-link.com in a last ditch attempt for Sony to resolve this issue and if I don't receive a response by the end of next week I will have no choice but to proceed with a small claims action.

Paul.

Further success!!!

Another update on my situation with the Sony Extended Warranty for my laptop, just to let you know that it's worth persisting.

A few weeks ago, I finally received a letter from VAIO Customer Relations (on behalf of Mr. Parasher) who stated they would not look to provide reimbursement. I wasn't happy with this and replied saying that Sony had acknowledged that defective graphics chips were used in a number of laptops and if I did not receive a refund, I would be filing a small claims action.

It has taken a while, but today I received a full refund for the amount that I paid for the Vaio Extended Warranty.

Thanks again to Paul and good luck to everyone else in resolving their Nvidia defect issues.

Paul.

Hello Paul1,

Well done on your further success :! :! :! :!

I have always said that any extended warranty that was purchased for a laptop that later transpired to be inherently defective can be reclaimed as they cannot sell a warranty on such a product.

I hope that your post gives others the inspiration to also pursue this amount.
Well done again Paul, I am glad that you were prepared to push it to litigation otherwise they may not have capitulated. :! :! :! :!

Good luck and best wishes for the future.

Paul
