The left hinge is more common but mine is the right as i look at it.

i noticed a cracking sound when i opened it on day and when I looked the plastic at the seam had split away and the metal hinge was exposed and completely snapped somehow.

I am slightly bothered that they will say that this problem has caused the screen to sometimes not work and therefore if I do get an independent report I'll be paying out and not recieving anything back from Dixons.

Anyway here is an email I recieved from the Dixons group, would you say I could still get an independant report?

Dear Mr xxxx,

Further to our conversation today with regards to the content of your letter in respect to the HP 9605 refurbished laptop. I apologise that the appliance has developed a fault outside of the guarantee period.

I have recommended on this occasion that you take this appliance to your local PC World store, for The TechGuys to inspect the unit for the fault that you have described in your correspondence. Whilst you are at the store please get the technician to call us on 0844 800 9090, quoting your case reference xxxxxxxx.

We will then be able to discuss the matter with the store at that time and this will allow us to make a decision with regards to your claim. Please note that our telephone opening hours are Monday to Friday between the hours of 9am and 8pm, and on saturday between the hours of 9am and 6pm.

Hello,

Well, if the fact that the hinge may make them think that this is the cause of the screens failure is bothering you and as long as they are not charging you then there can be no harm in going down to the store.

It looks like they will sort things while you wait so you have nothing to loose.

Give it a go and see what they say.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Hello Dimebars,

If you hinge has failed then I would contact Currys and would tell them that your hinge has failed due to a manufacturing defect.

If you Google "HP DV Hinge Defect" or "HP hinge defect" then you can read all about it.

This is a verifiable defect and the retailer has a responsibility to you in much the same way as they would if your laptop had the Nvidia defect.

I hope the above helps.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Two questions- how are you getting on as I have the same model and have just found the forum. I can't tell if this site is saying the defect exists for all the same models, or may /may not develop.

My screen used to go blank quite often and I'd reboot and all would be fine. I recently upgraded memory and after swapping it, the laptop no longer works at all. Could this be related to this defect or is it something different?

Anthony.

Hello Anthony and welcome to our forum.

You stated that you recently upgraded the memory and after swapping it the laptop no longer worked.

I have a few questions to see if I can help.

Have you tried putting the old memory back in?

Do you hear any beeps when you switch the laptop on?

Are there any LED's lit when you switch the laptop on?

Does the screen illuminate when the laptop is switched on?

In answer to your other question the problem may or may not manifest itself in a particular model that is otherwise failing in large numbers.

The defect is also not model specific as some manufacturers would like us to believe but is spread across a wide range of models from a wide range of manufacturers.

If you can let me know the answers to the above questions then I will advise further.

Best wishes

Paul

Hi Paul, Thanks for the reply to my post. to answer your questions:

Have you tried putting the old memory back in? Yes- exactly the same issue.

Do you hear any beeps when you switch the laptop on? Yes- 3 beeps.

Are there any LED's lit when you switch the laptop on? yes.

Does the screen illuminate when the laptop is switched on? No.

Laptop beeps, if you switch it off, it turns straight back on and beeps. 3 beeps apparently indicate memory error, but I wasn't sure if it was related to this issue.

Any further advise much appreciated.

Hello Anthony,

The three beeps that you hear are the universally recognised POST (Power On Self Test) error code that represents a failed video.

Needless to say this is a good indication that the GPU has failed.

You will now be able to pursue a claim against the retailer.

Who did you purchase from and how did you pay?

Please let me know and I will advise further.

Best wishes

Paul
