Hi and firstly thanks for this great resource!!

I was directed here by a friend after having trouble with a presario F500.

In short towards the end of last year the wireless stopped working, as it was out of warranty, and probably wouldnt even be able to find my reciept anyway, i just used a wireless usb dongle. A few weeks ago though it stopped working at all, when i turned it on the power light would come on, the fan would briefly spin up, there would be no display on the screen and then it would turn off. It would then gointo an on/off cycle until i removed the power source. I tried plugging it into my desktop monitor but still had no output.

the details on the back are

s/n CNF7094KXB
p/n GF795EA#ABU

I guess before i go tearing my house apart for a reciept i might not even find, what i need to know is does it contain one of the chips with the inherent fault, i did look around and i saw the p/n minus the #ABU on a list which i cant now find again.

thanks for any help

Hello Mrsmooth and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

I did a quick check on the HP website to see if I could find any information relating to your model laptop and found this:- http://tinyurl.com/4trl97r

This is the BIOS update page relating to your laptop. On the 12th December 2007 HP released a BIOS update named F.1F.

The purpose of this update, according to the HP website, was:-

Quote:
Updates the fan control algorithm of the system to reduce the likelihood of future system issues.

This update is listed as critical and proves that as early as 12 December 2007 that HP must have been aware of the potential for the laptop to overheat - otherwise why release an update that switches the fans on continuously?

Looking at your serial number I can see that your laptop was manufactured in China in week 09 of 2007 - slap bang when all the defective GPU's were being used.

What is worse is that looking at your profile this update was released months BEFORE you purchased the laptop which means that both HP and the retailer allowed the continued sale of a product that they really must have known could overheat and therefore fail prematurely.

Your laptop contains an Nvidia 6150 which is failing in huge numbers and so coupled with the above information plus the information you supplied I would say that it is highly likely that your laptop is indeed inherently defective.

How did you pay for the laptop? If you paid by debit or credit card then the statement would suffice as proof of payment.

There is a step by step guide on this forum that will help you reach a positive resolution and that is here:- post13.html#p13

If you follow my advice in that guide then you will be successful.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

One thing that you might want to try and that is to give the retailer a call and ask for a copy receipt.

Depending on the retailer they should have this information available and as long as you know the date and the amount of the payment then they should be able to find it.

Fingers crossed for you. :x

Best wishes
