Dear Paul.

An update for everyone.

Carly rang me today offering a repair by HP who had informed her that the repair would be free of the nvidia defect.
she stated that HP would not release the product number as lapcure rubbished the replacement GPUs.

Eventually through a roundabout way got through to **** a technical guy at HP. Conversation went generally as follows.

Mike "I wonder if you can help me I have an HP laptop which Comet has arranged for you to repair as the GPU has failed. Can you tell me which motherboard you will use in the repair."

*** "We don't replace the motherboard just the chip"

Mike "Is this a new type of chip or the original"

**** " It's the original "

Mike "But then the repair will fail"

**** "Not necessarily"

I informed Carly of the conversation and Comet are now looking at options.

Before my call to HP I was nearly persuaded that a repair was an option.

Looks like the Toshiba will be going my Granddaughters way, no she can have my old Compaq! Need to stand firm.

Mike

Dear all.

Forgot to mention that HP wanted the laptop to see which spares they needed, unbelieveable.

Seems the same old storey, when will they wake up to the real word where people talk to each other when they have similar problems.

How absolutely ridiculous is that?

Just to set the record straight, I do not rubbish the replacement GPU's, I rubbish the defective replacement GPU's.

Talk about trying to obfuscate matters, is there no end to the excuses that they will spew forth?

Well, well, well. The light comes on and suddenly it is all clear.

Could this be the reason why they cannot give the replacement motherboard part number? Because in fact the board is not being replaced and this would be patently obvious should this information be available pre-repair?

This makes much more sense than "HP would not release the product number as lapcure rubbished the replacement GPUs."

Even in that statement they are speaking of replacement GPU's and not replacement mainboards.

What is worse is when the conversation continues:-

Quote:
Mike "Is this a new type of chip or the original"

**** " It's the original "

So, there is no "newly revised motherboard" and there is no "newly revised GPU". They are, by the engineers admission, just using the same old parts and are not using anything different from before.

How confident are they in the repair they are offering? Well, that can be gleaned from the following:-

Quote:
Mike "But then the repair will fail"

**** "Not necessarily"

Note that he didn't say definitely not, which is what we are being led to believe?

I would say that you should reject their offer of a repair as you now have evidence that there is absolutely nothing "new" about the GPU they are using. Furthermore there is real potential that the replacement GPU will also be inherently defective.

Absolutely ridiculous!

Why on earth do they need to see your laptop in order to determine what parts they need? They can just type the P/N of your laptop into a database and see exactly what mainboard you have in your laptop.

In my opinion yet more obfuscation.

Let's see what Comet offer next, but if it is anything other than a refund or a replacement laptop then you have to decide what you want to do.

I know what I would do!

Any questions please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Hi Paul

I have, this morning, agreed with Carly for a partial refund of £179.00 for the laptop and £65.00 for the engineers report. I had previously worked out the refund based on what I could expect had I gone to Court. My figure for the laptop was £180.00 so in fairness I think Comet have been reasonable in making this offer. Ultimately it saved them Court cost and other incidentals.

As a contact at Comet Carly Garmston as always rung me and returned calls and tried her best to resolve the problem, she is always a pleasure to deal with and is always polite and professional when putting forward Comet's proposals.

If I were a Director of Comet I would have HP on the carpet to explain their position and how as a major retailer they have damaged my business and what are they going to do about it!

Many thanks Paul for your help, and all the other contributors to this Forum. I am sure there are thousands of consumers with failed laptops because of this problem who have no idea of their rights and just get fobed off. So I will continue to pass the word with all my contacts.

Good luck to everyone and just keep the presure on, you have nothing to lose and everthing to gain. It just takes time to get there.

Mike

Hello Mike,

Well done on your success :! :! :! :!

It is a good job you spoke to HP otherwise you would have been none the wiser of the way they intended to repair your laptop.

Well done to Carly, it is about time we had something good to say about Comets Customer Service personnel.

I agree with you and would go further and say that I would demand that they recall all their defective laptops. Believe me, there must be hundreds of thousands of them in circulation.

Thanks for that Mike, much appreciated.

Well done again and all the best for the future.
