Hi
I've just come across this site after a reference to it on MSE. I bought my laptop from Staples about 18 months ago and found that the graphics settings ocassionally changed their settings. Display has now failed completely and I wonder whether this is an NVidia defect?

I'm a bit of a novice regarding anything technical relating to computers, although I can use them OK :D

Can anyone help me with a starting point of how to find out if my laptop has failed as a result of this defect and then I'll roll my sleeves up and settle in for the long haul battle if necessary.

Many, many thanks

Floss

Flossie,

It's nice to see that someone read my post on MSE :D (although I see that Paul has been posting on there as well)

It certainly sounds to me like the Nvidia defect but I'm not an expert. I'm sure that Paul (lapcure) will be along shortly to give you some advice.

Martin

lol. Many thanks! I would never have known about this problem if I hadn't seen info on MSE, so I take my hat off to you!
I was about to assume the laptop was a write off so am very grateful that I have a possibility of recovering some of my hard earned.
Do you charge a percentage fee? *grin*

Hello Flossie and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you have been experiencing with your laptop.

Ok, a couple of questions.

You say that your display has failed completely. How is this manifesting itself?

In other words, is the display blank, or split into many different screens or
just corrupted?

Also, can you let me know the serial number from the underside of your laptop?

From this we can determine the year and week of manufacture.

I have to say that I have seen many, many TX1000 units with this defect
so, sad to say, you may well be a victim.

Let me know that info and I will then advise you further.

Best wishes

Paul

Paul

Many thanks for the reply. As soon as I read the symptoms, I had a feeling it was this. Have had no luck with laptops recently last 3 have only lasted 18 months each.

When problem first maniifested itself, the display settings were being changed at start up and I had trouble resetting them. Then on two ocassions, the screen went into blurred multi-coloured lines. The first time this happened, I re-started and it was OK for a while and the second time when I restarted the screen was blank and has been ever since.

Serial Number is CNF7160FP4.

In a perverse way, I would be delighted if this is the problem as at least I stand a chance of getting some money back. I've already replaced the laptop anyway, so it's a bonus iyswim.

Thanks from a very grateful
Flossie

Hello Flossie,

Ok, your serial number of CNF7160FP4 means that it was manufactured in China in week 16 of 2007 - just when all the defective chips were being made.

So, onto the next step.

Contact the store where you purchased the laptop. Tell them that your laptop has failed with the Nvidia defect and that it was inherently defective at the time of sale.

They will probably tell you that you are out of warranty and will refer you to their Head Office.

You should then contact their Head Office, again telling them that your laptop is inherently defective due to the faulty GPU.

They will then probably tell you that there is a reverse burden of proof.

This basically means that it is up to you, the customer, to prove the inherent defectiveness of your laptop.

This is easy to do by way of an engineers report and we can help you with that.

Start by contacting the store of purchase and let us know how you get on.

If you need any help or advice then please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul

Many thanks Paul. Comes as no surprise really that it's the likely defect.

Will go to store as suggested and advise of response. Have read around on the site and it does seem to be a case of getting the relevant report and then holding your nerve and waiting for capitulation.

You have no idea how grateful I am that I found the info on MSE that led me to this site.

HI, there are a few of us on this site who have had refund/ replacement deals with Staples, so don't let them fob you off .....
and any talk of not knowing what your rights are, and knowledge of this defect by them should be quickly corrected :-)

I bought 2 laptops of them one was repaired just inside the warranty ( now showing the first signs of overheating) the second I did get a full replacement / exchange :-).

So I may be back to visit them again soon.

As Paul said do most of the contact with them via there head office.

Good luck

Ralph

Thanks for the support Ralph.

I have indeed been referred to their Head Office and am about to print off the template letter to get the ball rolling and will send Recorded Delivery. I have, so far, been unable to find my receipt but am still looking - luckily I paid by card so will be able to provide evidential statement that way if required.

Will advise of response when received.

Kind regards

Hello again

I have received a response from Staples which is the expected "reverse burden of proof" letter asking for a report. Paul, perhaps if you could let me know what I need to do to get this to you for the report to be carried out, I would be grateful. Dunno if all letters say this, but they appear to concede that, if this is the problem and laptop is beyond economical repair, they will replace or refund (minus fair usage).

So far, so easy!
Kind regards
Jo
