I have spoken to the PC World resolution centre this afternoon and they want to repair the machine. I have been told that should the part fail within 12 months a replacement machine will be the only way forward. They have assured me that the board that will replace my disfunctional one has been manufactured within the last 12 months and will not suffer the same problem. Given their re-assurance I am going to give this a try. They have also agreed to pay for the engineers report.

Thanks for your help with this Paul,

Rob

PS the GPU test will be completed the minute I get the machine back!!

Hello Rob

To the best of my knowledge there have been no new Nvidia chips manufactured for this range since 2007/2008

There are many new boards available, but in my opinion I believe that they are still utilizing the older Nvidia chips.

There has been no announcement from Nvidia to say they have released an updated G84, G86, 6150 etc etc
chip.

If it does transpire that these boards are not "new" ("new" in this case means a different revision to the defective board rather than just a new board) then I would say that customers would have a very good legal case.

I would be very interested to know the part number of the mainboard and revision number of GPU though.

Best wishes

Paul

Paul,

As I said before my Sony Vaio has the same chip as the packard bell and I cannot get the GPU temp above 71C even when running the programmes suggested. In the Vaios defence it has got a magnesium alloy case which maybe very beneficial :?: I have told them if the GPU temp reachs anything like the temps in your report it will be going straight back as it will only be a matter of time. As an aside my neighbour is a solicitor and she claims that the repair of the machine does not affect you rights in anyway and would be viewed by a judge that you have at least made an attempt to try and resolve the issue, she also said that for some equipment six years is a typical life span for home use. :o
I will keep you updated anyway.

When I get the machine back if you can let me know how to get to the GPU I shall let you know the number!

Rob

Paul,

I have had the machine back today from repair and I have to say the GPU idle temp is between 60-63C thats with the laptop on a desk and between 63-68C on my lap. The hottest I could get it to run with that software with the balls flying round was 85C. The machine is definately a stack cooler than before. Now what have they done to achieve this? I have no idea what I am looking for if I opened the machine up.

I am hopeful the machine will be fine now. May I take this opportunity to thankyou for your help and your report. I would have ended up paying for a fixed repair cost of £230 (which I was told when I originally took the machine into PCWorld as the machine was out of warranty). In the end all this has cost me nothing (all my costs have been refunded) and the retailer has backed down from its original position.

Thanks

Rob

Ps Is it possible they have under clocked the GPU to stop it over heating? If they have how would I know?

Hello Rob,

Thank you for the update and your kind words.

Excellent news on your success - and fingers crossed that the board doesn't fail again.

Every now and then just check the temperatures to make sure they are not rising too much.

Well done though Rob.

Best wishes

Paul

Sorry, missed this on my original post.

What are the readings from CPU-Z relating to clock speed etc?

Why not click the little camera and take a screenshot and email it to me at nvidia@nvidiadefect.com
and I will take a look.

Thanks Rob

Best wishes

Paul,

The clock speed is correct, we have a guy in work who knows about this sort of stuff and says its all ok.
The machine is definately better than before, we don't have the processor fan on every 2 minutes at high speed and the GPU temps are still the same as last week. The only downside to this repair is my wife has internet access in the day again now and is spending to much money...there had to be a downside!

Regards

Rob

Hello Rob,

Excellent news about your laptop - fingers crossed it stays that way.

No, the only thing you need to do is remove the wireless card to stop your wife

Best wishes
