Laptop Make: HP
Model: dv9288ea
Graphics Card: 7400

Amount Paid: 1299

Hi,

I bought a HP DV9288ea from Comet in Feb 2007, it cost me £1100.

I found this site after some research as my laptop constantly smells of burning when switched on. Last month the left hinge broke, which I now know to be a inherit problem with this batch of laptops.

My question is this, at present the laptop is still working, I've run a GPU temp check at switch on it's about 70c but at load can get into the late 80c 90c. I'm guessing at some point in the near future the laptop will fail on me, what are my options.

edited to add after 30 minutes browsing this website onlythe temp has gone up to 77c

Should I start proceedings against Comet to get a replacement laptop now before it fails completely?

Any advice any of the users on this site can give would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Zig.

Hello Zig and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you are experiencing with your laptop.

You are quite correct in the the broken hinge is another inherent defect in the DV9000 range of laptops.

The temperatures that your laptop is reaching are a little high, though this doesn't necessarily mean that it is a manifestation of the defect.

The overheating could be as a result of the heat sink aperture and fan being blocked. Unfortunately due to the abysmal design of these laptops they tend to get really blocked with dust etc. It is actually mostly dead skin that is in the air but it can, on occasions, accumulate in this area and degrade the ability to dissipate the heat.

You can purchase a can of air that you can blast through the vents at the back of the laptop to see if this clears the problem.

It could well be that your laptop is indeed inherently defective due to the Nvidia GPU, but we shouldn't presume that this is the case based purely on the temperatures.

I would contact Comet though with regard to the defect in the hinge. The trouble is that when the hinge breaks it also breaks the back fascia.

What happens is the retaining nuts in the fascia that the hinges screw in to shear away from the lid destroying the mountings. This basically means that you will need replacement hinges and also a replacement lid. If the front fascia is damaged, which usually happens, then this will also need replacing.

Comet may try and fob you off and state that it is customer misuse. You should tell them that the hinge defect is an inherent defect and that you have taken the utmost care of it.

They may tell you that you are out of warranty. You should tell them that the warranty status is irrelevant when the goods in question are inherently defective.

Don't let them fob you off, you have every right to have the lid and hinge repaired for free.

Start off with the above and see what they say then pop back here and let me know and I will advise further.

If you have any question or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul
