Thanks for that Jagatiello,

It just goes from bad to worse doesn't it.

As long as we keep this up we will keep the Nvidia Defect
in the public arena.

Thanks again.

Here is an official statement from nVIDIA themselves. The fact of the graphic failure is subliminally interested into the statement, but since this is offical from nVIDIA and it can also be backed up by the fact this sales for the Q2 of 2008 was dead down.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/io_1215037160521.html

I printed a copy of this for my own reasons - such as them blasting it off.

Also, a quick throw in of your laptop model # into google will produce some nice results.

Yeah, I have links to Lenovo run forums where users are complaining of failed GPUs. Here are a few, there are more...

for R61s:

and T-series too!

Funny that, Lenovo deny that the issue affects their builds...

Hello Boredstoopid,

Thank you for those links, much appreciated and I am sure that they will help others with IBM or Lenovo laptops.

I agree, though it is not just IBM denying the issue. A number of other manufacturers are also saying their laptops are not affected by the defect yet they are failing in huge numbers with exactly the same manifestations.

Do you remember when this issue first surfaced and Sony was shouting from the rooftops that their laptops were not affected. It was only when some of their models started failing in droves did they sit up and put their hands in the air and admit that several of their product lines were affected. Sadly though, like many other manufacturers, they have only admitted that the defect exists in a very small number of models.

I think I can safely say that we all know differently!

Thanks again.

Best wishes

Paul

Just had my Asus G1Sn fail on me, due to the accursed nVidia chip deciding it didn't want to work for me anymore. Since the laptop is 3½ years old and well outside the warranty period I decided to take it apart to try to get it working again. What I discovered was, frankly, rather worrying. When I took the heatsink off the graphics chip I noticed that there was what looked like a strip of plastic foil embedded in the thermal compound. It looks like one half of the packaging the thermal pad came in was peeled off to stick it to heatsink but the foil on the chip side wasn't removed at all before sticking it onto the chip.
To me, having this foil between the heatsink and the chip would cause a bit of a barrier for the heat to transfer across and would explain why the chip overheated.
Has anyone else come across this or am I the only one with this problem? Can't imagine I am after 3-4 years of these problems.

I can upload pics of this as well. Can they be uploaded directly here or will I have to link the from photobucket or something like that?
