Laptop Make: Dell
Model: Vostro 1510
Graphics Card: 8400M GS
Purchased From: Direct From Manufacturer
Amount Paid: 410
Date Purchased: 15 May 2008
Date Failed: 28 Jun 2010
Finally arrived at this forum and it's extremely useful.
Bought a vostro 1510 laptop from the business side of dell but for personal use delivered to home address and paid for with credit card. It's got the nvidia 8400 M GS
Bought May 2008 and started doing strange things in June 2010. Lots of strange lines going up the screen and crashing. did repair itself upon restart so managed to get all data off it. However not an expert and assumed it was the hard drive. Bought a cheap 120GB HD and replaced the old one. Same things happening. A friend reckoned it was the graphics card and I reinstalled the drivers which had a dramatic effect for about a week and everything seemd ok. Started to go down again and became more difficult to recover and it would last for less time before the lines reappeared. Now it will not start normally without a screen of lines but will start in safe mode aklthough the screen is poor and when I move the mouse it leaves artefacts all over the screen.
Did a bit of googling and noticed that the dell blog offered an extra year warranty but not good for me. Wondered about the fit for purpose laws and thankfully ended up here.

I've looked through the board but nobody seems to have any success with Dell yet. has anyone taken them to the small claims court and won or got a replacement before that?

I also don't actually know who to contact at dell. Obviously when I enter my service tag it says your warranty has expired. Anyone got the best email/phone to contact about this.

I will start the process of claiming going but would be really interested to hear from peop[le who have dealt with Dell.

Thanks
Eric

Hello Eric and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you have been experiencing with your laptop.

Firstly, don't worry about taking action against Dell, treat them like any other company and don't let their size put you off. At the end of the day they made and sold you a laptop that was doomed to fail prematurely so they have to deal with that.

If you were to go to court then Dell would be very foolish and unwise to try and defend what is, in essence an indefensible position. Their ONLY defence would be that the laptop is out of warranty as there is no other possible defence that they could enter.

As has been proved so many times before this is not a defence and Dell will lose, though I would bet that Dell offers a resolution prior to the case getting to court.

It is excellent news that you paid by credit card as the card company are as liable for the inherent defectiveness of your laptop as Dell so you will get a resolution out of one or the other (but unfortunately not from both).

Well, it is like walking through treacle trying to get a number that is non-sales for Dell.

I have found this:- 01344 373727, which is the customer care number for business. I would give them a call and ask if they have a number for consumer customer care.

Good luck Eric and if you need any help or advice along the way then please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul

Hello Eric,

My Graphic card died too after the warranty
I also have a vostro 1510 with nvidia 8400 M GS for private use.
bought it july 2008.
the laptop is out of warranty but after some research on the internet I was very angry.
I called Dell and told them that they had sold me a system with a card that had knowing issues.
If i knew that then I never bought the vostro 1510
I also didn't know that there was one year extra warranty.
And after 2 years it broke down and I told them I wanted a solution.
They are gonna replace the graphiccard for free.
So please try to call Dell.
I am from the Netherlands, sorry for my bad english, but I wanted you to know that maybe you don't have to court ;)

No, Dell told me that they don't have the 8400 anymore so they are gonna upgrade the card.
But I don't know how it works outside the Netherlands, so please call dell if you want to know what they are gonna do about it and what card you get.
