Hello All , Hello Paul (admin team),

I went through this forum and read a lot of useful info , but I understood that it's going to be quite tough to get a refound or replacement from Comet.

My case in brief: I bought my laptop , hp 2799ea , from Comet in june 2008.
Copmputer sold as new , not refurbished, but then i see a non clear note on the recieve , regarding the display, no explanation provided about that.

- april 2009 , hard disk fails, proved via bios memory test, at the same time crashes and potential video problems were showed.
- may 2009, after struggling on the the phone wiht hp, I got the hd replacement
- august 2009, problems seem to be back , this time not with the hd , but clearly with the GPU , Ge Force 8400 M GS (as per stated in the system info file).
- sept 2009, after a new battle with hp , because the laptop went out of warranty too, i got a new free repair: mother board replaced ( in the repair note there was stated: FAULT ¦ VGA card not the same as expected. FIX ¦ VGA fail , main board replaced ).
- march 2010 , hd fails again , system unable to boot up. After 2 weeks of attempts to boot, as per miracle , it started to work again, even if the hd memory test was still failing... but who cares it works again!...
- august 2010 , after 11 months since the last repair, the GPU fails again , dark screen. During the last 11 months the laptop was overheating and sometimes producing short beeps noises, as if some circuitry was blowing up.

Now , end of august 2010, I have already spoken directly with the manager of the Comet shop in Tottenham and arrived to decide to write to the Comet Head Office.
I printed out the template of the first letter to send them and I'm ready to move for further steps.

I would like to know if "lapcure" is still available to provide a formal technical report and if it's possible to get a telephone number , in case it will be necessary to speak directly with Paul.

Thank you for your kind attention,

I will keep you updated during the progression of this case until arriving to the real happy end; at the same time i hope it can be useful for other people facing such disgrace!

Best regards,
Federico

Hello Fererico and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of all the problems you gave been experiencing with your laptop.

Well, if anyone wanted proof what these repairs are unreliable then your case is a classic example.

I did a quick search on the HP support site and found this for your laptop:- http://tinyurl.com/346sgvz

This is proof that as early as April 2008 that HP were aware for the potential for your laptop to overheat - otherwise why release a BIOS update that switches the fans on 24/7 to the detriment of your battery?

I note that you purchased the laptop in June 2008 which was AFTER the BIOS update was released. My question is, why did HP and Comet allow the continued sale of laptops that could potentially overheat?

Comet may not have known about the BIOS update but HP certainly did.

HP keeps on claiming that they informed people of this BIOS update, though I have yet to find someone who actually received a notification from HP.

This is a very good bit of evidence to support your claim and PROVES that your laptop had a potential heat issue prior to your purchase.

Your next step, as you correctly state, is the engineers report.

In order to proceed with this then please take a look at the following:- need-an-independant-engineers-report-t62.html

In your case I would chase Comet for a full refund as you have not had unhindered use of the laptop during the time you did have it.
My works number, though I am away until tomorrow, is 0113 8150506

I will PM you my mobile number in case you want to chat sooner.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul

Hello Paul,

good afternoon and thanks for your reply.

Today i'd have another little question for you: I sent the "letter before action" on the 31th of august (with registered post) and I haven't receive any answer so far (15 days)... how long do you think it's better to wait before progressing with the next step?

Best regards,
Federico

Hello Federico,

Well, if you have given them 15 days then this is more than enough time for them to have answered you so I would now move on to the next step.

When you have the report and when you send it to Comet I would not give them as long as 15 days to comply and would limit this to seven days.

If you have any further questions then please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul

Hello Federico,

In order to proceed with an engineers report please take a look at the following:- need-an-independant-engineers-report-t62.html

That tells you exactly how to proceed and obtain a report.

I removed your address from your previous post for security reasons.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Hello Paul,

thanks for your reply.
Roughly 2 hours ago I logged a job in the lapcure internet site; today or tomorrow I will wait for the collection.
Outside on the package I added the RMA number.
In the package I just put the laptop (without battery) and the power cable.

That's all for now.

Best regards,
Federico
