Hi

New to the site, but it looks an excellent source for information.

I Gave up when my HP DV9500 series died. Took it to an independent repairers and was told it was the graphics card (common fault) and would cost £150 to fix.

Thought hey, it's lasted 2.5 yrs, time for a new one. but then googled the problem and found this great site.

I phoned the store that I purchased it from and the customer services rep said that it was a common fault and logged a claim for compensation. He told me that head office would ring in about a week regarding the matter.

So, what would a honest valuation be for the laptop.

Purchased - 20/12/2007
Purchase Price - £599.99

Thanks

Hello Gr1ffiths and welcome to our forum.

In order to calculate the amount of refund that you would receive you would use the following formula:-

1) A laptop should last 5 years = 60 months
2) You paid £600 for the laptop
3) £600 /60 = £10 (This is the monthly rate)
4) Your laptop lasted approximately 31 months.
5) 60 - 31 = 29 (This is the remaining number of months unused usage)
6) £10 * 29 = £290.00

So, the minimum you would expect to receive would be £290.

Whilst this does not sound like a lot, it is based on 2.5 years of unhindered usage so I guess it is fair.

What do you think?

Best wishes

Paul

Hi Paul.

Many thanks for the reply.

I guess any settlement is a bonus when I had resigned myself to the fact that it was dead.

I have been reading other posts and will almost certainly need an independent report. So will use the links when the time is needed and send it to yourselves.

Here's praying it's a painless process.

Regards

Leighton

Hello Leighton,

If you can let me know the P/N of your laptop I will see if I can find out any more information about your model.

This number is on the white barcode label on the underside of the laptop.

Best wishes

Hello Gr1ffiths,

I have checked your part number and could not find any further information released by HP that you help your case.

This is not a problem and you should continue as normal.

I just wanted to check to see if HP had released a BIOS update for your laptop, which they haven't, though this doesn't affect your claim in the slightest.

If would have been a bit extra proof if they had.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Many Thanks

Hello Gr1ffiths,

I have checked that part number and the results are the same - there has not been a BIOS tweak for your laptop.

As I said before, this is not a problem and does not affect your claim in any way.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Best wishes

Paul

Latest Update....

A customer service advisor phoned this evening regarding my claim. He advised me that PC world would have to inspect the laptop to find the fault. When I told him that I would like an independent evaluation he said that was no problem as they would accept an independent report. He did say though that there are 4 things that need to be stated on the report

1) What part has failed or caused the fault

2) What diagnostic software was used to diagnose the fault

3) What was the possible reason for failure (e.g. Poor manufacturing built quality etc)

4) Estimated cost for repair (Parts, Labour and VAT)

I informed him that I thought the fault was due to a Nvidia defect and he said that if it was then PC World would offer a partial refund.

All in all, I am very surprised that it has been so easy so far. Here's hoping it's a painless process.

Question for Paul... In your reports do they list the above 4 things that PC World require.???

Yes, the reports fully cover the four points listed above - an in great detail.

The report runs to four A4 pages and is detailed and concise.

Though regarding point 4, I do not recommend repairs to these laptops for a number of reasons and that is fully detailed in the report.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Best wishes
