I bought the refurbished HP DV9267ea from Currys online store at 19th May 2007 for 799 pounds as a birthday gift from myself. Unfortunately the laptop was defected by NVidia problem from end of last month. Several lines appeared on screen, and the laptop stopped working. I tried to update my bios and the graphic driver but useless, the problem still exists. The only way I can use the laptop is to enter the Safe Mode. I emailed HP customer service but they said my laptop is out of warranty, they cant give me any support unless I pay for their support.

But today, the laptop died totally. When I pressed the Power button, the screen is on but in black. I found the forum via Google finally, thanks god!! I read most of the topics in the forum by using my poor iphone, and find loads of helpful information from them. I will call Currys customer service tomorrow and hopefully I wont be p155ed by them. I will update the thread if I get any reply by Currys.

BTW, do you think I can get free repair and refund on the same time? I didn't backup my laptop and there's lots of music and apps worth thousand pounds I bought from iTunes Store. I don't want to loose them...

Sorry for my poor English and many thanks for the experts who help people in the forum.

Hello Stephenalec and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you have been experiencing with your laptop.

Well that would be a little unfair on the retailer so I would have to say no, that is not possible.

Though you would be able to recover your data once you have had a report as the laptop will work again for an indeterminate amount of time. This is a side effect of the rework test that we do.

I did a quick check on the HP website and found the following for your laptop: http://tinyurl.com/32ev94r

This is a BIOS update that HP released on the 5th February 2008. The purpose of this update, according to the HP website, is to:-

Quote:
Updates the fan control algorithm of the system to reduce the likelihood of future system issues.

Reading further into the HP support pages it also states:-

Quote:
The new BIOS release for your notebook PC is preventative in nature to reduce the likelihood of future system issues. The BIOS updates the fan control algorithm of the system, and turns the fan on at low volume while your notebook PC is operational.

This proves that as early as 25th February 2008 HP must have been aware of the potential for the premature failure of your laptop - otherwise why release an update that switches the fans on 24/7?

I would forget about pursuing HP, you purchased from Currys so it is Currys that are 100% responsible to you.

They may try to fob you off and tell you to go to HP, but you should tell them that it is they that are responsible to you.

They may also tell you that you are out of warranty. You should tell them that the warranty status is irrelevant as you have six years to take action against a retailer.

If you take a look at the following link you will find a step by step guide to getting a refund:- post13.html#p13

If you follow that then you will reach a positive resolution.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Hi Paul. Thx so much for ur reply. I will contact Currys next Monday. I asked for repair just want to save the datas from the dead laptop. Do u think I can ask them to get my datas from the laptop without repair?

I found many people get replacement laptop at the end, thus in my case do u thunk I can get a replacement laptop?

Hello Stephen,

To be honest a repair is not advisable unless Currys can provide you with absolute proof that the mainboard that will be used will be 100% free from the defect.

No. they will not recover the data for you as this is not a service that Currys provide.

Well you may get a replacement laptop or a refund, but you will certainly get one or the other.

I cannot guarantee that you will receive a replacement laptop though as this is not always a forgone conclusion. Sometimes customers have received a replacement laptop and on other occasions they have received a refund, partial or reduced due to usage.

As I mentioned previously, you will probably have to submit an engineers report in order to receive a replacement or a refund.

If you decide to send your laptop to ourselves for the report that I can guarantee that you will be able to recover your data once you get the laptop back with the report so you should not worry about any loss of data.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

16/08 update

I called currys customer service today, a lady answered my phone, and record my details for the purpose of "out of warranty claim", and she said a member of the out of warranty claim team will contact me in 5 working days. She also suggest me that I may need to get an independent engineer report to claim replacement or refund.

I will wait the call And update the post.

Thanks again to Paul and many friends in the forum.

I would wait the 5 days and if they have not replied I would move on to the next step.

I don't know why they should expect you to wait five days for them to respond. I have always felt the best method is for you and not them to set the timetable and to keep them to tight deadlines of seven days.

I just think it is unreasonable that you should have to wait when the wait, in my opinion, will not bring a favourable response.

I look forward to your next update.

Good luck and best wishes

27/08 update.

I didn't receive any calls from Currys or dsg, so I called them today when I was back from holiday. The guy checked the system and told me they tried to contact me several times but can't reach my number. He asked me to bring my laptop to a local computer shop and get a report and repair price quote from them. If the repair charge is reasonable curries will pay for the charge. If the charge is not reasonable, currys will find out to issue me a partly refund or replacement laptop.
