I bought my HP dv2799ea from major hightstreet store. It was working fine and then I accidentally spilt some juice over the keyboard. I sent it away to insurance and £50 later they repaired it.

Since coming back to me just over a week ago there has been lots of isuess of screen freezing and black screen with you power on even though there at lights and fan coming on. After investigation I could have this defect.

Who is to blaime here and who do I make my claim against? store or insurance? They replaced the mainboard, is that where the gpu is?

Sorry for bad spelling I am not from england.

Hello Mr Spark and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you have been experiencing with your laptop.

As you have had the mainboard in your laptop replaced then it is not the suppliers problem any more and it is down to the insurance company to resolve it.

Did they actually state that they changed the mainboard? If so I would not expect a brand new board to fail so quickly so one can only assume that maybe the board they used was either a refurbished or a second hand board.

I certainly should have not failed so soon so you should get straight on to the insurance company to complain. They really do not have a leg to stand on as there would have been a guarantee provided with the repair.

I would tell the insurance company about the Nvidia defect and would also tell them that you want some form of guarantee that the next board that will be used will be 100% free from the Nvidia defect.

If they refuse to give you a written guarantee then I would tell them that you want an alternate form of settlement.

If they want proof of the defect in your laptop then take a look at this link:- http://tinyurl.com/346sgvz

This is the BIOS update for your laptop the purpose of which was to "Turn the system FAN on at the lowest speed, when the notebook is powered on."

This means that HP are aware of the overheating issue in your laptop and have released a "fix".

Does the insurance company really want to provide you with a repair that could potentially overheat?

Stand your ground and don't let them fob you off.

Please keep us updated on your progress.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Thanks for reply.

Yes, it say they replaced mainboard although I think they have put in a false board as it says in CPU-Z mainboard report it is Winstron mainboard and not HP. Do you still think it could be this problem before I send to you?

See attached screenshots from CPU-Z for more detail. Thank you.

Hello Mr_Spark,

Winstron are the manufacturers of the mainboard and they will have manufactured your board on behalf of HP so all is ok with that.

Are you still experiencing problems with your laptop?

There are two utilities in the downloads section of this forum. One is GPU-Z which is a temperature monitoring utility and the other, Rthdribl, is a GPU stress tester. Those are available here:- tools-to-test-to-see-if-your-nvidia-gpu-is-about-to-fail-t57.html

If you run those two utilities then let me know how hot your laptop gets under load then I will advise you further.

Best wishes
