Hello Jordan,

It would be good to know the serial number of the three laptops to see if they ran sequentially.

The chances are these laptops were all made at the same time and if the serial numbers are pretty similar then that could point to a whole production run being affected.

I know for a fact that looking at the database of serial numbers I have for the laptops I have produced reports on that there are whole batches where the serial numbers are indeed sequential. This tell me that whole production runs were possibly affected.

Like I have said before, it is my opinion that this is just the tip of a very big and very costly iceberg!

Best wishes

Dear all,

My HP 6735s purchased from Ebuyer in December 2008 has also just failed this weekend with apparent motherboard failure - 5 flashes of CAPS LOCK and a blank screen. The laptop has simply been sat on my coffee table and used for evening web surfing for the past 18 months – very light use its never even left my house. I had noticed that the rear left hand side does get extremely hot so much so that it has even discoloured my wooden coffee table at the point it has been sat! After a two week holiday I returned this weekend and switched it on only to be confronted with the blank screen and flashing CAPS LOCK. I switched it off and on a few times and it did eventually boot up with no problems on Saturday, it was then left on for the rest of the day and functioned without any problems. Luckily I took the opportunity to back up my photos! However since then it simply will not boot up I just get the 5 flashes of CAPS LOCK indicating main system board failure.

HPs website says that the warranty expired on the 25th of December 2009, I have not as yet approached Ebuyer but I obviously feel that failure of the laptop in under two years in unacceptable and a brief search of google has revealed this and several other threads indicating I am not alone in suffering from motherboard failure of this model shortly after the warranty has expired.

Any advice in how I should approach Ebuyer would be greatly appreciated.

Best Regards

Andy

Hi,

I just had a quick call with Ebuyer. The initial reaction was its out of warranty we cant help try HP. After refering to the Sale of Goods act they then asked that I obtain a technitions report which must show the laptop is inherently defective. They will pay upto £35 towards this if it is the case.

I guess that is the next step then, should I put anything in wiriting though? You dont really have any record when you make a phone call.

cheers

andy

Well you don't need it in writing now as they have given you the authority to proceed.

If you would like us to provide you with such a report then please take a look here:- need-an-independant-engineers-report-t62.html

Once you have the report you should send them a copy along with a letter before action via recorded delivery.

Please ensure that you keep copies of the report, letter and postal receipt.

If you have any questions then please let me know.

Best wishes

Hi Paul,

I will do that - just need to dig the box out of the loft for it this weekend. The call to Ebuyer was interesting - she had clearly dealt with this issue before but they must have a standard fob-off procedure. Initially stating its out of warrenty contact the manufacturer and then after further persitance she said I should seek advice from trading standards if I was unhappy. It was only at the point I mentioned the sale of goods act that she asked me to provide an engineers report - she could have offered that at any point but didnt.

I will box it up this weekend and be in contact for an engineers report next week. What is the suspected failure mode for these machines as they have an ATI graphics processor rather than NVidia?

Cheers

Andy

These laptops fail on the BGA grid under the ATI GPU.

In much the same way as laptops are failing due to heat issues with the Nvidia GPU's the same is true of these laptop.

I have seen a large amount of these units and looking at my database of repairs I can see sequential serial number patterns which can only mean one thing; Whole production lines have been affected.

The test is the same with your laptop as it is if I were testing an Nvidia GPU and the results are pretty much 100% conclusive.

Hope the above answers your questions.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Best wishes
