I have recently experienced issues with my laptop. The computer has just locked and a weird image appears on the screen (which made me believe it was related to the graphics card)

This evening i switched my laptop on and the power light comes on but nothing on the screen. After a short time the power light goes off and the same process happens again and again ..

Please can you confirm if this is the fault most people are experiencing with the graphics chip ?

If so i will need to start proceedings directly with comet ...

I will need to confirm the purchase price & date once i dig out the receipt.

Thanks

Mark

Hello Mark and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you have been experiencing with your laptop.

The problems you describe are definitely manifestations of the Nvidia defect.

Your laptop contains an Nvidia 6100 GPU and is one of the known defective chips.

I have examined a large number of your model of laptop and found virtually all of them had the defect.

Looking at your serial number I can see your laptop was manufactured in China in week 45 of 2007 which was slap bang when all the defective chips were being used. I will take a stab at a purchase date of mid to late December 2007.

Comet have been known to try and fob customers off. They may tell you that you are out of warranty. You should tell them that the warranty is irrelevant as you have six years to take action when the goods in question are inherently defective. They may then tell you to contact HP. You should tell them that your contact is with Comet and not with HP and it is for Comet to resolve the situation.

Stand your ground, be polite but persistent.

They may then tell you that they want to inspect the laptop. You should refuse this and remind them that after six months of ownership there becomes a reverse burden of proof which means that it is up to you, the customer, to prove that the laptop is inherently defective and it is not for Comet to prove this on your behalf.

Start off with the above and see what they say then pop back here and let me know and I will advise further.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Thanks for your advice on the above:

The Laptop was purchased in December 2007 for £399

Is it worth going into the store and asking for a refund due to the problem or should i skip that stage and just write it all in a letter and send it to head office ?

Thanks

Mark

Hello Mark,

I wouldn't waste your time dealing with store level staff, they really cannot help you.

You should kick things off with the letter before action to their head office.

If, after seven days, they have not responded in the positive, then you should proceed to obtain an engineers report.

If you follow my advice in the step by step guide post13.html#p13 then you will reach a positive resolution.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

When oh when will these guys learn from their mistakes! How many times do they need to get whooped in court before they realise that they simply cannot win?

Good luck with the first letter Mark but I wouldn't hold your breath.

Best wishes

This is exactly when I purchased mine - please refer to my thread, concluding with my recent success against Comet.

Good luck!

Thanks

Comet have phoned me today and said my laptop isn't on the list of affected laptops according to HP. I was kind of expecting this after reading other threads on here.

Mel, I have sent you a pm. Could you send me the full letter you sent by email as you didn't need to acquire a report before comet agreed to a refund.

Paul, If i send my laptop off for a report will this confirm that it contains one of the known defective chips ?

If you let me know the procedure I will try Mel's letter hopefully first then if that dosen't work i will obtain a report and then take court action.

Thanks

Mark

Well, that is to be expected. HP's "list" is woefully inadequate and desperately in need of an update.

I do not think that HP will admit to the defect in any laptop other than those detailed on their "list" as the cost implications could be horrendous for them.

Yes, our reports are very detailed and stretch to four A4 pages. They are concise, detailed and have not failed to help secure a positive resolution.

For further details on how to obtain an engineers report please tak a look here:- need-an-independant-engineers-report-t62.html

For a step by step guide to reaching a positive resolution please take a look here:- post13.html#p13

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Thanks Paul.

Mel, I am sending a 2nd letter using the template you sent me. I have also copied in Hull trading standards by email. If this dosen't work i will obtain a report from Paul and start court proceedings.

Thanks

Mark
