Hi there all,
new here so just posting my problem details and sayin hello.
You'll of heard this issue a thousand times but would be nice to get feedback and post my progress. I'll follow the guides on how to proceed against currys. I'm familiar with this stuff as have reclaimed bank charges before.

Lappy is HP Pavilion dv2630ea. Powers up. Hard drive spins fine.
Just no boot up. Screen is on but remains black.
Removed ram and battery etc but no joy. Connected to tv via hdmi and got no signal.

I presume therefore this is the nvidia card issue.

Lappy has been out of action bout 6 months but only just discovered this site and the inherent defect.
Lappy is approx 2 years old.
Not sure of exact graphics card in there.

I presume I can just follow the guides but would appreciated any other advice before I commence contacting currys.

Thanks

fossell

Hello Fossell and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you are experiencing with your laptop.

The problem you describe all sounds exactly like a manifestation of the defect.

If you follow my advice in the step by step guide then you will reach a positive resolution.

They may try fobbing you off with the "sorry sir but you are out of warranty" line. You should tell them that you have six years to take action when the goods in question are inherently defective.

They may then tell you to contact HP. You should tell them that your contract is with Currys and not HP and so it is up to Currys to resolve the situation.

You should tell them that you intend obtaining an engineers report on your laptop and that when you do so you will forward the a copy.

You should then ask them for the name and address of where you can send the report and legal correspondence.

When you are ready for a report please let me know as this is a service we provide.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Right. PCWorld have tested the lappy for free in store and confirmed it is the defective nvidia problem.
Im now waiting for customer services to contact me regarding repair.

I dont want it repairing. I want a new lappy or a refund. Can they get away with offering only repair and nothing else?

Regards

Fossell

Hello Fossell,

No they cannot.

you must ask them for a couple of things.

The first is a written guarantee that states the following verbatim:-

Quote:
The mainboard being used to repair your laptop is from a completely new batch and is 100% free of the Nvidia defect. If, at at point in the future, it transpires that the mainboard is inherently defective due to the Nvidia GPU then a refund or replacement will be given.

They will probably refuse to give you this as you would be quite reasonable to reject any offer of a repair and insist on a refund or a replacement.

If they are prepared to give you the above guarantee then you should ask for the part number of the mainboard being used.

If they let you have that then please let me know and I will investigate the part number to see if it is indeed a newly revised board.

DSG Retail, who own PC World were recently slated by a judge for "acting unreasonably" and for "failing to provide evidence that the repair will be of a satisfactory standard"

The two points I noted above are very important if you want a alternative resolution to a repair.

Any questions please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes
