Hello Fortslap and welcome to our forum.

There is another site and that is located at www.hplies.com

That is predominantly US based.

Good luck and best wishes

I found that website this morning through some more link-searching. Thanks for taking the time to post and help me out. In the event I'd get a response here quicker, I'll post my post from HPLies here:

"I have an HP Pavilion dv6275us that I bought sometime in mid-2007. It worked fine for about a year until it started giving some freezing problems but it still worked. For another year I dealt with this and soon the battery stopped recharging. It came to the point where the AC charger only lit up and charged when I strategically positioned it; otherwise, with a battery and no charger, the computer doesn't turn on. If I take the battery out, its quite hard to keep the charger so it's always charging; otherwise the computer just shuts down with no power. The battery itself only lasts for a few minutes when I take out the charger. I gave this to a friend of mine who runs a shop and he kept it for some time. Eventually he told me it was a problem with the motherboard that needed to be replaced, but he said he didn't want to touch it (quite odd since he normally is very capable). Additionally, my GPU hits 65 degrees C idle and up to 85 under a load. Now, I'm stuck with a hard to use computer which according to HP will run me down almost $400 - absurd for a computer that lasted about two years and is now out of warranty. Any help for a first step and if I can get this computer fixed for free/getting a refund through court? Does this sound like a manufacturing defect to you guys? Thanks"

Hello Fortslap,

Well, it sounds like you could have a problem with the DC Jack as you stated that it works if you "strategically position it". I have seen quite a large number of such failures which were not related to the Nvidia defect.

One of the manifestations of the defect is battery charging problems so it could be that your laptop has two problems though the temperatures you have quoted are not too bad.

If you plug the charger in and move it slightly does the blue LED around the DC jack light up and then go out?

Please let me know and I will advise further.

Best wishes

Yeah, that is pretty accurate. I have to push it in certain ways or lay the laptop a certain way to keep it lit up.

Hello Fortslap,

Well if that is the case then it is a DC Jack problem and is quite easy to repair.

It certainly is not connected to the Nvidia defect and does not require that the mainboard be replaced as the DC jack in your laptop is "off-board" which means that it is not soldered directly to the mainboard and is on a small separate board that is wired directly to the mainboard.

Even if the DC Jack was fixed directly to the mainboard it could still be repaired so I am unsure as to why the person who looked at it stated that the board would need replacing.

This has nothing to do with the fact that the battery is not charging and it could just be that the battery has failed, this happens and a battery is classed as a consumable item.

The temp of 85C under load is a little high, though not necessarily an indication of the defect.

If you are good with a soldering iron then you could change the DC Jack yourself. If you don't feel confident then you can always purchase a replacement DC Board. This is a little more expensive but certainly cheaper than a replacement mainboard.

What do you think?

Best wishes

I will definitely try that out (thanks). But why would HP want to replace the mobo as well? I figure that even if they have crappy customer service they'd know what the problem was at least.

Did HP ever get to look at your laptop or was this a "diagnosis" done over the phone?

I cannot see why they would want to replace the mainboard, did they tell you why the board needed replacing?

From all the problems you have described regarding the positioning of the AC Adaptor then I would say, quite categorically, that it is the DC Jack at fault and not the mainboard.

Good luck and if you need any help or advice then please let me know.

Best wishes
