I would be very grateful if someone could offer me an opinion on the following.
I have an HP pavillion dv9590ea I believe it has the 8600 nvidia chipset in it. I purchased it in sep 07 for £1214, about 20months later in june 2009 it developed what I have now discovered is the typical fault with the graphics chip, initially low res graphics and random rebooting followed by complete failure with vertical white lines and other odd effects on the screen.
Initially I contacted HP technical support who gave me various checks to do. Once it became clear that the laptop required major repair or replacement I entered discussions with HP, who were most unhelpful and offered to carry out repair at my expense. Obviously I refused. Eventually they informed me of my rights under the sales of goods act and referred me back to Dabs.
I contacted Dabs back in sep 09 and they informed me that the burden of proof is on me. I am ashamed to say I kind of gave up at that point, kept meaning to do something but didn't get round to it.
Yesterday I discovered this forum had a bit of a read, then wrote to Dabs threatening legal action unless they resolve this to my satisfaction.
Today they offered me a partial refund of £733 that they say is final and non negotiable.
I am thinking that this is not an unreasonable offer based on the age of the laptop. However it seems that they were very quick in replying.
What I am interested in is opinions, do you think this is a good offer or would you pursue this. The next step is obviously legal action, any advice gratefully received.

Hello Dave and welcome to our forum.

Well, that is a very reasonable offer and is in line with what you would get should you proceed to litigation.

Considering the fact that you have had two years use out of it you could say it has cost just under £5 per week to use it.

Looking at it like that I think that it makes their offer seem acceptable.

What do you think?

Best wishes

Paul

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the reply, that is basically what I was thinking. It does seem fair. Just a shame that the manufacturer is not held more accountable in these situations. Very disappointed with HPs attitude towards this. Obviously won't be buying another HP laptop.
This website is very informative and has been very helpful.
Many Thanks
Dave

Hello Dave,

I agree with you regarding the manufacturers, they really should be held to account but that does not seem to be happening.

Thank you for that Dave, much appreciated.
