I have this exact same model laptop! I came across this forum as
I was experiencing problems with my laptop the 2nd time round and decided to look into it as I'd already paid £170 for it to be fixed previously.

I had no idea that the fault was with an inherently defective graphics card! This is the 2nd time I have had problems with the graphics card and now armed with my new found knowledge, (all credits to the fabulous people on this forum!!) I am now able to take this matter up with PC World.

I spoke to the advisor, who told me to provide a copy of the engineers report stating the manufacturers fault, along with a covering letter to them and they will either repair, replace or refund as long as I can prove it is indeed manufacturers fault.

I hope we can both find a solution to this problem, Good luck!

Hello Mouseyy and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you are experiencing with your laptop.

I have moved your first post to a new thread so that I can help you personally and so that there is no confusion with the original thread.

Your case just goes to prove that there are no reliable parts available.

PC World may try and offer you another repair but you should reject this - they had their chance to repair your laptop and they failed.

There is a step by step guide to securing a refund and that is here:- post13.html#p13

You will need to obtain a report in order to secure your refund and we can help with that.

Full details on how to obtain a report can be found here:- need-an-independant-engineers-report-t62.html

If you need any help or advice along the way then please let me know.

Please keep us updated on your progress.

Best wishes

Hi Paul!

I didn't realise I could get an engineers report from here! I have already obtained one from the person who fixed my laptop previously and have had that sent off along with a letter explaining the problems I've had to PC World.

The letter was sent today with recorded delivery and I'm hoping I can get a replacement or even a refund. I've been advised by the person who provided the report to not get any repairs and to also maybe look into getting a laptop which isn't branded Packard Bell!

I actually emailed Packard Bell tech and they replied several days later to say that it would cost me £54 to have the laptop checked out by one of their technicians and to cover the cost of a courier. At which point they will contact me and let me know how much repairs will cost! I think this is pretty cheeky given the fact that the machine is faulty!

I'm just waiting to hear from PC World and again I would like to thank you for all the information you have on these forums for people like myself who don't have the first clue about computers!! Without your help, I don't think I'd even think about contacting PC World again after they turned me away! Fingers crossed!

Currently on the phone to PC World, they have finally contacted me and have told me I can only opt for a repair. I've told them that it has been repaired previously, but obviously has failed again. They are only willing to offer me £229 towards the cost of repairs only! I've asked for a refund but the advisor has said they can't offer me a refund unless I have it repaired by their own techincians first!

I've explained and repeated myself over and over to this advisor that I want nothing but a part refund which I am entitled to. I am now awaiting a second phone call whilst she speaks to her manager! They've admited to the fault being in HP laptops and have said that my laptop currently harbours the defective chip, so why can't I just have my bloody refund?! :(

Hi

I have the same Laptop as you with same fault and the max PC WORLD will offer me is £229. This is after many phone calls & I don't want to have to take them to court. All I want is a replacement laptop of the same spec don't even care if it is a returned item. But the nearest Laptop I can find to match mine is £399.

If I could mention your name or anyone else with the same laptop or any laptop at PCWorld that would be great and this may help my case.

Please say your:

Full Name
Reference Number (Mine begins with CC)
Who you dealt with
How long you had it for
What they gave you, if refund how much

My laptop is nearly 2 years old and to make matters worse can not even access my data.

Please Reply with these details so at least I can mention you and they may be able to match your offer.

Thanks

Hello Tatorpost and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you are experiencing with your laptop.

There is a formula that you ca use to calculate how much you should be entitled if you were to be refunded based on usage.

That is as follows:-

1) You paid £400 for the laptop.
2) A laptop should last 5 years = 60 months
3) £400 / 60 = £6.67 (Monthly rate)
4) You had 21 months usage out of the laptop
5) 60 - 21 = 39 remaining months usage
6) 39 * £6.67 = £260.00

So £260 would be the minimum you would get if you were to proceed to court.

Like you correctly state, this is not going to get you a laptop.

I would contact them and tell them that their offer of a refund is of no use to you as this does not allow you to purchase a replacement laptop.

I would further tell them that the only solution you will accept is a replacement laptop.

To be honest though I don't think that providing them with previous case details will be of use as they always state that all customers are dealt with on a case by case basis - whatever that means.

What I would do is to tell them that you are aware of a large number of successful court claims though this forum and that you are giving them ample opportunity to settle without the need to incur further legal costs.

If they are wise then they will concur with me and make you an offer. If they want to play dumb then you will have to decide what you want to do.

I appreciate you say that you don't want to *have* to take them yo court but if they are not prepared to increase their offer then I am afraid that you are left with little choice.

They are well aware of this forum and they are also aware of the advice that our members receive so they probably will not think that you are bluffing if you were to tell them that you fully intend to take legal action against them unless they comply.

What do you think?

Best wishes

Paul
