What are the usual effects of overheat damage to the laptop?
Since yesterday, my Compaq boots up only every other 5th powerup...

Hello Lockheed,

The effects of the overheating are many, including loss of wireless, battery charging issues, black screens, constant shutting down, failure to start up.

Each individual case, whilst having the same defect, can display different manifestations of the defect.

The fact that your laptop takes five attempts to boot up could indeed be caused by the Nvidia GPU.

If you have any questions then please let me know.

Best wishes

Update.

HP called me this morning and basically said this:

1. My unit was enrolled on a recall programme and thus granted one year additional warranty which ended in 2009. I did not take advantage of this programme.

BUT

I was not informed by anyone about this programme and when I found out about it somewhere in 2009 on notebookreview forum, I checked the list of eligible laptops and mine was not on it.

2. I kept telling them warranty status is irrelevant because I have 6 years to take action against the retailer but they kept repeating this does not apply as the unit was listed as with "a known issue" and added to recall programme (extra 1 year warranty) for which I did not enroll.

Well, they may well have done this but it was so well hidden on their website that you would had to have been looking for it in order to find it.

They cannot simply say that the recall program had ended - as you quite rightly stated, you have six years to take action.

How could you possibly have taken advantage of it if you didn't know it existed?

Did they send you a letter to say that they had sold you a laptop that was doomed to fail prematurely? No they didn't. because if truth be known they probably didn't want you to find out about the recall otherwise they would have gone to more trouble to let you know.

Why didn't they do a press release? Well, then that would have informed too many people which, if you ask me, was exactly what HP didn't want to happen.

I really cannot believe how ill-informed HP actually are!

What planet are they living on where they think they can get away with a statement like that?

I would not waste any more of your time on them. They obviously do not have a clue as to the gravity of the problems that face them and they equally have absolutely no comprehension of the SOGA. Either that or they are playing at being purposefully awkward.

I would now obtain an engineers report and send them a copy. Give them seven days to comply and if they fail you should then sue them.

What a thoroughly unprofessional company they are treating their customers like this - as if their argument about the recall program could ever stand up in court.

Please let me know if you have any queries.

Best wishes

Hi Lapcure,

Thanks for yet another explicit reply. I have just had a second call form HP and after reviewing the purchase proof I sent them, they still denied recognition of my claim. I asked them to give me a postal address to which I should sent a letter before action and after some mumbling they gave me this:

PO Box 9225
Ashby Delazouch
LE65 9BW

1. Does this look like a proper address?
2. Should I send them Letter Before Action or LBA with Engineers report? It might take some time for me to obtain one as right now it may be difficult for me to cover this extra cost.

Hello Lockheed,

The address they gave you looks correct. Though some people get the Amen Corner address. But I would send it to the one they gave you.

I would send the following document with the report:- letter-wth-report.pdf

You should download that, edit it with your details and send it with a copy of the report via recorded delivery to the address they gave you.

This gives them seven days to respond in the positive. If they fail to do so then you should give them a call on the 8th business day and should tell them that this is their last chance to settle with you before you take legal action against them.

If they offer a positive resolution then great. If not then simply pop on over to www.moneyclaim.gov.uk and file your small claims action against them.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Hello Lockheed,

You can get a report from ourselves. The cost is £65 and this is fully recoverable from the retailer.

Full details can be found here:- need-an-independant-engineers-report-t62.html

If you have any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

I am afraid this is not possible as this is my only computer which I use for work and I cannot allow more than 1 downtime day. Can you recommend someone in central London?

Hello Lockheed,

I am sorry, but I don't know of any repair companies in central London.

I think you will struggle though to try and get it all done in a day.

If you have any questions please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes
