Hi all,

I first experienced the dreaded BSOD last week with a nvlddmkm.sys error. Now the laptop screen has packed up completely and I am even experiencing problems when connecting to a VGA monitor. I know the problem is NVIDIA related because if I uninstall the NVIDIA driver and then restart the machine will load.

I have done a fair amount of research and ended up here at this very useful website, which would be of great help if I had bought the machine here in the UK. However, I bought it while living in Australia (where I was a resident only for tax purposes).

Does anyone have any advice as to whether I have recourse here in the UK or Australia?

Many thanks

Hello Swing and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you are experiencing with your laptop.

Unfortunately you would have to pursue the retailer in Australia as they are the one with whom your contract is with.

What are the laws like in Australia?

Do you have any similar laws to the Sale Of Goods Act?

Have you checked the temperatures of your laptop? If so are they quite high? If they are is there any laws relating to dangerous goods that you may be able to rely on?

I am sorry I cannot advise you regarding the laws in your country but we are here if you need any other help or advice.

Please keep us updated on your progress.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the welcome. I have submitted an enquiry to the Office of Fair Trading in NSW explaining the nature of the inherent defect and that according to their own website consumers have a right to a refund if "the goods purchased have a basic, serious fault that was not known by the customer at the time of purchase".

I will also write to the retailer, and in-line with the experience of others on this website I am not expecting a reply. However, I would then submit one of your engineer reports to the retailer, the OFT and the Australian Consumer Commission. I have read on hplies.com that other Australian based laptops have been 'repaired' by HP but now I know (thanks to this forum) that any 'repair' is only a temporary solution I would be unwilling to accept this.

I will keep you updated as to progress, hopefully I can help/provide encouragement to others who maybe be dealing with overseas retailers.

On another note, my brother's laptop recently experienced a loss of wireless and now it won't turn on at all. It is an Acer Aspire 5920 - 6A3G16Mi - bought from PC World in Sept 2007. I can't work out if it has an NVIDIA chip in it or not, are you able to help?

If it does then I might send both his and mine to you for a report!

Thanks,

Matthew

Hello Matthew,

The Acer laptop has an Nvidia 8600 GPU

This particular chip is one of the more prolific for failing.

There is no problem with sending both of them, though you will need to book them in as separate jobs.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul
