Hi , Was directed to your web site by my son . I bought an HP from John Lewis in Glasgow , happen to be up here in Scotland when it 'crashed ' - the screen went blank , the computer was making very loud beeps , one long 2 short and could not be switched off .
After readuing your forum , I took it in , had the usual , out of warranty story and I would have to pay while it goes and is repaired by HP repairers ( not HP actual ) .

I have sent a copy of the letter from your site , to John Lewis head office , giving them the 7 days notice .

I have various problems .
1. completely ignorant as far as computers go
2. need the info off the hard- drive ( desperately ) how do I go about it ?
3. I move around a lot with my job , so what is required for the engineer report , does the machine need to be sent away ...............

The computer is an HP dv2535
Bought 26th Nov 2007
Failed +/-4th June 2010
John Lewis , Glasgow

It seems they all fail after about 2,5 yrs

Many Thanks

Hello Sascot and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you are experiencing with your laptop.

Take no notice of John Lewis when they say that you will have to pay for it to be repaired by HP.

If your laptop is indeed inherently defective then you will not have to pay a penny.

Please find below answers to your questions.

1. completely ignorant as far as computers go

This is not a problem as a knowledge of computers is not required.

2. need the info off the hard- drive ( desperately ) how do I go about it ?

You can do one of 2 things. Either purchase an external USB caddy and take your hard drive out of the laptop, pop it into the caddy and then recover your files on another PC or laptop.

Though saying that it goes against the advice I gave you at question 1. Would you feel confident about doing this?

Yes it would need to be sent to us as we will need to inspect the laptop and perform some tests in order to be able to confirm the defect.

If you were to send it to us for a report I could also backup your data to DVD disk if that helps.

If you have any further questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Please keep us updated on your progress.

Good luck and best wishes

If( I or someone else ) tamper with the computer , by taking out the hard drive , does that not give them reason to dispute the claim ?
I was also given the following advice ,
''No. The problem is now with the hard drive, so they should not change any of the data on it!

However if you want. Tell them to take that one out and put in a new one to do the work on. Then you can buy a case for the original one that you took out. They might charge you to do it but I am sure that it will be a lot cheaper than getting a new one.

You might want to make sure that you have your windows product code so that they can install windows on the new hard drive. This should be on your computer."

But , when I switch on the computer , the screen is blank and a very loud high pitched beeping , and the whole keyboard is frozen . I have to wait until the battery is flat before it dies . I can't even switch it off .

Hello Sascot,

No, they cannot dispute your claim because you have removed the hard drive to backup the data.

This would be expected when users are in the situation that you are.

But make sure you put the drive back in once you have backed up your data.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Hi Paul ,
well I waited for a reply and in the end had to phone the head office where they had forwarded it on to the Glasgow store ( who initially declined to help and referred me to the head office ) They had apparently sent a letter and she forwrded this to me via e mail ( see below )
I then spoke to the lady in aftersales who again insisted they know nothing about other branches resolving the issue with refunds etc , and said I could take it in and thier engineers do a report . What do I do ? Neither is there any mention of cost involved and liability .
Below is part of the letter sent by JL Glasgow

]I am sorry to read that your HP laptop has developed a fault.

As your laptop is out of guarantee we would generally not send the unit away for repair. You have outlined in your letter there is a known fault with N-Vidia graphics cards which Hewlett Packard are aware of, so on this occasion we will send your laptop to our engineers.

I am aware that you are based in London and would advise you to take your faulty laptop to your local John Lewis branch in order to obtain a quick resolution.

I will contact London branches prior to your visit so they are fully aware of the situation.

Hello Sascot,

I would not take it in to allow them to do a report. After six months of ownership the onus changes to the customer to prove the inherent defectiveness of their laptop. This is called the reverse burden of proof.

You will need to obtain an engineers report on your laptop in order to prove the inherent defectiveness of your laptop.

In order to proceed with this please see the following:- need-an-independant-engineers-report-t62.html

Once you have the report you should send a copy to John Lewis giving them seven days to either replace or refund your laptop.

They have a clear obligation to you and if your laptop is inherently defective then you cannot lose.

If you have any questions then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes
