Hi,

A few days ago my HP tx2130ea stopped detecting the wireless card, in looking for a solutions it was not long before I found this forum.

I'm 22 months into the 2yr warranty you get from John Lewis so I will be taking the laptop to them to fix - but from reading on this forum it sounds as though this could be the wrong thing to do.

I was thinking of dropping off the laptop with them and explaining what I have found out about the issue - and asking them to look into it and not to repair the laptop unless they can guarantee it for a further 2 years?

Reasonable? Any better advice? I don't want to much hassle, just a working laptop. A new one I know is free of this issue would be good but I doubt that will come easy.

Hello Sprthompson and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you are experiencing with your HP laptop.

The failing wireless is one of the first manifestations of the Nvidia defect.

To be honest I have worked on hundreds of the HP TX???? range of laptops and they are doomed to fail.

The replacement parts that are available are, in my opinion, as defective as the boards they are replacing.

I would get them to give you the written guarantee that I advise. If they refuse to give you that then I would reject their offer of a repair and would proceed to issua a small claims action against them.

Don't let them fob you off, stand your ground and you will succeed.

Please keep us updated on your progress.

Good luck and best wishes

Hi ,

Thanks for the reply.

I'm struggling to get my head around this...

I can see that these is a faulty nvidia chip about, but I can't find out if I definitely have one in my PC or not?

My pc is a tx2130 and has Nvidia 6150 graphics, how can I demonstrate that this laptop contains the faulty chip?

Cheers,

Sean

Hello Sean,

In order to be able to prove that your laptop is inherently defective you will need to obtain an engineers report.

As you are still under warranty then they will fix it for free but the problem is that there are no reliable parts available.

I see these laptops day in day out and I can assure you that this is the position.

If John Lewis want to repair your laptop then you need to request a written guarantee that states the following:-

Quote:
The mainboard being used to repair your laptop is from a completely new batch and is 100% free of the Nvidia defect. If, at any point in the future, it transpires that the mainboard is indeed inherently defective due to the Nvidia GPU, then a refund or replacement laptop will be offered.

If they refuse to give you this written guarantee then you should refuse the repair on the grounds that if they do not have the confidence to give a written guarantee then you do not have the confidence to accept such an offer of repair.

Believe me Sean, John Lewis cannot win with this unless they do foolishly give you a written guarantee, in which case you will have to accept the repair but keep that guarantee in a safe place.

Please let me know if you have any questions or need any advice.

Best wishes

Paul

Hi,

I took the laptop to JL and allowed them to send it for repair.

It came back and the motherboard and heat sink had been replaced, as well as the bios being updated.

I asked them about the warranty I would get on the repair and they said this was 3 months. I said that I was aware of a flaw in the nvidia chip in the pc and because of this I would not accept a 3 month warranty as my belief is the laptop is doomed to fail. The guy said he was aware of the fault but that the fixed bios is meant to handle the problem, and that one could argue that the bios was faulty and not the chip but that this was now fixed.

I said I didn't accept that as the case and after some discussion they offered me a 12 month warranty for the fault and said if I wanted to take it further I was welcome to contact JL head office.

I asked to think about it and took the PC away.

Anyway I turned the laptop on at home and found that the Bluetooth Ariel was now missing so I immediately sent it back.

I would like advice on what to do when it comes back again? I'm having trouble arguing with them in the shop and I am still unclear what I have the right to ask for?

How can I prove that the laptop is doomed to fail and what can I ask for? Refund?

What does that mean for all the files I have on my pc?

Cheers for any help.

I'm picking my laptop up this evening. Assuming it is now fixed I'll be taking the 12 month warranty they offered. I'm also going to make sure I keep it back up a lot.

The warranty doesn't make a lot of difference really, because I guess if it breaks again with or without warranty I will be able to get a refund via the methods written about here, at least the warranty means I can get if fixed to use it while I claim for a refund.

I don't want to be a consumer who gives in, but I need a laptop now that I can use and I don't have the time to deal with a claim.

I fully understand that and who can blame you?

I am just glad that you have been able to resolve the situation to your satisfaction and have now got a laptop that does what it is supposed to do.

So consider this a success - at the end of the day you could have been left with a doorstop :! :! :!

Well done and all the very best for the future.

I purchased this laptop for my son in December 2007.
December 2009 and he got the black screen of death.
We sent it to a computer company who said it was the Hardrive which was replaced.
Guess what it has happened again but this time we have been advised that is needs
a new Motherboard.
Do you feel that it is the Nvidia defect and is there anything that I can do or is it too
late to try and make a claim?
Already spent £100 and do not want to spend anymore on it.
I only stumbled across this forum tonight... too late I guess!!
many thanks
Sue

Hello Sue and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you have been experiencing with your laptop.

Don't worry though, it is not too late to make a claim.

I have a few questions.

1) Who did you purchase the laptop from
2) How did you pay (Cash/credit card)
3) Can you prove purchase

Your warranty status is irrelevant as you have six years to make a claim when the product in question is inherently defective.

Please let me know the answers to the above and I will advise you further.

Best wishes

Hi Paul,
Thank you for your warm welcome and message.

I purchased if from John Lewis Direct on-line
I paid by a Visa debit card
I have the order confirmation, Vat receipt and Barlcays Verification receipt.

I actually purchased the Laptop on the 18th Dec 2007
It crashed about the 18th /19th Dec 2009 but my Son was not back from Uni
and I was not aware that it had happened.
I had a 2 year guarantee which ran out on the 17th/18th Dec 09!!

I hope that this is of assistance and I really appreciate any guidance that you can
give me.

I must admit that I feel a bit stupid for not checking anything out
before I paid for the first repair and the cost of the 2nd inpsection.
I just thought it typical and bad luck!

Kind regards
Sue
